PostPosted: Mon Jan 26, 2015 4:18 pm    Post subject: I can startx now but cannot return to console Reply with quote

As described in the previous thread, I can start X11 now.
However, I cannot return to the console.

The phenomenon is:
1. exit X11 by choosing 'Exit' in twm.
2. twm seems to try to termnate but it freezes.
3. After Ctrl + Alt + F1, the screen turns black.
4. Any key cannot be accepted but I can ssh from other machines.

There are no errors in Xorg.0.log and it says "Server terminated successfully".

I attach xorg.conf and Xorg.log.0.

By changing the kernel configuration, I can return to console from X now. :D

I've changed the framebuffer support to:
Code:

CONFIG_FB_OF is not set
CONFIG_FB_ATY128=y

from
Code:

CONFIG_FB_OF=y
CONFIG_FB_ATY128 is not set

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration says
framebuffer drivers coflict with KMS, so they should not be set.

I set CONFIG_FB_OF=y because the screen of my iMac DV (G3) freezes with no framebuffer drivers set.
However, OpenFirmware framebuffer did not work after exiting from X.

aty128fb driver does not cause any troubles.

Xorg.0.log puts the following warnings out.
Code:

[   851.082] (WW) R128(0): Failed to read PCI ROM!
[   851.082] (WW) R128(0): Video BIOS not found!
[   851.082] (WW) R128(0): Can't determine panel dimensions, and none specified.
[   851.146] (WW) R128(0): Static buffer allocation failed -- need at least 9216 kB video memory
[   851.228] (WW) R128(0): Direct rendering disabled

I guess the warnings show r128 does not work correctly and it is the cause of this problem.

that noInt10 may refer to your int10 module usage in xorg, but as it is also the interrupt for video, you should review why you have set that noint10 to true
I have no idea what this option do in xorg, it's just to makes sure you are not like me and know why you have set it :)

It looks like you may need to enable KMS if your Xsession is freezing. Reboot and enter the following in yaboot

Linux radeon.modeset=1 video=offb:off video=radeonfb:off radeon.agpmode=-1

I had a similar issue on my iBook G4 when I tried to start Xorg for the first time. This did the trick.

After Ctrl + Alt + F1, the screen turns black
Did you try Ctrl + Alt + F2?
(on my arch system Ctrl + Alt + F1 doesn't work)
