The last thing i did before this happened was to emerge fbpanel. I'm new to gentoo and would appreciate any assistance greatly.

snakejr ... well, 'exec' will replace the process (the execution of .xinitrc) without creating a new process (so the old process ends). This means 'fbpanel &' is never executed.

Generally, you have something like this:

~/.xinitrc
Code:
xrdb -load ~/.Xresources
foo &
exec bar

... so 'exec' is the last process (the window manager, most often). I'm not sure about the syntax for ck-launch-session but assuming its correct then it should come at the end.
