Does this owe any sort of heritage to "wicd"? I got the impression somewhere that wicd has been abandoned. Perhaps someone with SuSE wanted to see its concepts kept alive?

No, nothing. The name similarity is purely accidental (as mentioned in the rationale message). Many people seem to be confused about it, so the name might change, although so far it hasn't. |

WICD had a new release last december, so it seems it's not dead per-se just very low on manpower.
