I just installed xfce in my old Toshiba laptop according this: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xfce -
I already have KDE with KDE profile, and followed these command:
Code:
echo 'XFCE_PLUGINS="brightness clock trash"' >> /etc/portage/make.conf
emerge --ask xfce4-meta xfce4-notifyd; emerge --deselect y xfce4-notifyd
emerge --ask x11-terms/xfce4-terminal

However there is no desktop icons. I saw another wiki: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xfce/HOWTO with this line:
Quote:
Next, double-check your USE flags in /etc/portage/make.conf ; you'll probably at least want USE="-gnome -kde -minimal -qt4 dbus jpeg lock session startup-notification thunar udev X" .

I did not implement these recommended USE flags at all, but saw some posts that say to add thunarUSE flag in order to have desktop icons -
Please advise if to add it to make.conf or package.use, or if there is another solution to have desktop icons?
EDIT: Sorry.. I found out that I have already thunar USE flag -
something else is missing? I have icons, buy all icons in the bottom screen, like:
Terminal and File Manager and many other are missing.

EDIT: Although the screen resolution is same as in KDE (1024 x 768) -
It seems less quality in xfce and the letters in terminal are bigger - It is not big deal but -
how can improve it?
How to add keyboard layout for local language?

DO NOT ADD "USE=-kde"! That will destroy your kde installation. Whoever suggested that assumed that xfce is going to be your only desktop environment.

Edit - I don't use XFCE so I can't answer your icon question.

Tony0945 Hi,

Yes I know- I did not follow wiki exactly - some of USE flags are relevant to kde so they remain.
Meanwhile I worked out some issues:

Desktop icons - I found in wiki that need to install theme with this command:
Code:
emerge --ask x11-themes/greybird
Then enter settings > appearance and choose from Tabs,
one Style and one Icon, like: Oxygen. Now I have most of icons except a few.

Keyboard layout - Need to add plugin as can find in this doc: https://wiki.xfce.org/faq -
Code:
emerge -av xfce-extra/xfce4-xkb-plugin

BTW: Please inform me how to make a link to particular paragraph of a page - I saw something with #??

Also the clock was not right, and I did not find out how to adjust it -
Finally I used date command to do it.

Actually there are lot of plugins for xfce.

Hope I fixed those issues in the right way, and not just adding unnecessary plugins, that may add extra weight on the system.

Still do not know how to improve display resolution?

In general , XFCE working very nice - fast and friendly. The installation did not take much time.
Even with binary libreoffice it is good enough.
However I am looking for a way to install libreoffice from source (may be with distcc).

Glad to see you resolved the icons. That was one reason (a major one) why I didn't keep xfce.

Tony0945,

Thanks for your support!
I guess you already know System Rescue - It is good idea to have it in the pocket...
I just booted with this usb stick - It is working very well, nice organized and all the icons are ok.
It is using xfce and I'v been told that it is based on gentoo -
Can we do reverse-engineering to figure out what exactly needs to be installed,
in order to have the same configuration?

Regards
