Hello all,

This is (hopefully) a simple question: I'm wondering which desktop environments support per-screen desktops out of the box.

As of this moment, I am running E17 on Gentoo, and have always loved the per-screen-desktop support it provides. To try and be more specific E17 allows me to swap desktops on each monitor independently and also drag application windows between them. I did not have to do any special X configuration in order to achieve this--it simply functioned like this immediately after installing E17.

Are there other Desktop Environments that provide the same functionality, or is this an enlightenment-specific feature?

And on a slight tangent, if a DE does not support this be default is there configuration that can be done from a X standpoint to provide it?

Thanks,

k

I think i3 and openbox will do something very similar, although I have not tried it.

i3 sets each monitor as a 'desktop' and you can send applications between desktops and create new desktops on your whim.

Openbox documents a similar system.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

i used openbox originally before switching to e17, and i can't remember if it did the same thing or not. i'll have to install it again to see. if so that would be great because openbox serves as a great starter environment.

the only downside there is the inability to use a different window manager (i think)...i was hoping XFCE would have the per screen desktops so I could try out the new Gala WM if I could get it to install as there is at least some people out there who have been able to make gala install on that environment.
