|
|
Tonight I tried booting off the Live CD for my Ultra 1.
I had visited the path gentoo/releases/1.4_rc4/sparc/
and downloaded sparc32/livecd/gentoo-sparc-1.4_rc4.iso and
sparc64/livecd/gentoo-sparc64-1.4_rc4-2.iso
On first observation it is strange that there is only one CD
per platform type, and the sparc64 version is called -2, which
normally meant the second part of a 2 CD set for one platform.
I found the sparc64 version refused to boot, although
I could see files on there fine when mounted from another
system. The sparc32 version booted with only the silo options of
help and config. The welcome message suggested "gentoo"
as a boot option but it didn't exist.
So what's up? Is everyone ignoring the "stable" versions and
installing from "experimental"? I've looked at the current install
notes and they don't have anything to say about the specific
files to use for the ISO images.
I do notice that experimental includes a 2 CD set per sparc
platform type, as I expected from my x86 experience.
I'm hoping to replace my Debian with gentoo. I hope experimental isn't too experimental or I'll just stand-by and wait for something more solid to replace Debian. |

Use the latest experimental isos on the mirrors. They have quite a few fixes for some of the problem child machines. Though they are experimental, they are up to date, and work just fine.
I've used the latest one on one of my Ultras, and it works like a charm with no booting weirdness or anything.
Give the latest experimental a shot and see how it goes. If you have problems or need a hand, come check us out on IRC. There are usually a handful of people around to help. _________________ -Todd <todd@gentoo.org>

I'm now building stage 1 on my Ultra 1 machine. It is going well. I'm using the Sept 8, 2003 experimental CD 1 for my boot environment.
I think the 1.4 rc4 ISOs should be replaced by a recent experimental one.
Being able to build from a Live CD echos what most people are doing
on x86, and this is apparently broken or not available on the
regular release. As well, the sparc install instructions are pointing people
to the regular 1.4 ISO images without any mention of the experimental
being an option. |
