Could you post the exact error message you're seeing?
Do you mean you emerge --sync or did you emerge portage and it stopped working?
The latter would be kind of problematic, as there are some self checks to make sure this doesn't happen... |

you didn't, by chance, install portage-9999 ?
I recently updated it and it wouldn't download e.g. via webrsync
since it seemingly couldn't make sense out of
/etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf
but there was no change to it ?

perhaps you're seeing something similar and emerge --sync isn't working ?
(emerge --usepkgonly of a previously backed up portage version "fixed" it for now ...)
emerge isn't working at all ?
have you mounted /usr/portage ?

Ouch...thanks for the heads up.. sort of makes sense, I suppose I myself need to be aware that something is wrong with the portage package, perhaps... I suppose so far I'm glad I haven't run into it yet... (using 2.2.14, no special python targets but I do have machines that I tried to only use python 2.7...)
