I have a newer laptop with a clickpad (no physical buttons for right/left click) that I am trying to install Gentoo on, but I cannot configure the mouse behavior correctly. My typical drag/drop behavior is to click the item on the left bottom edge with my left index finger and drag the item around with my right index finger in the middle of the clickpad.

When I release my right index finger to rescroll because I've run out of path for my finger to travel on, the item snaps to where it thinks my left index finger is at (window typically moves to bottom left of the screen). Problem doesn't occur when I release my left index finger first, then start the window dragging process again, but this is a bit unnatural and slow. What is the correct xorg config to prevent this from happening?

This is what I currently have:

Code:
Section "InputClass"
   Identifier   "TouchPad"
   Driver      "synaptics"
   MatchIsTouchpad   "on"

   Option      "VertEdgeScroll"   "on"
   Option      "VertScrollDelta"       "111"
   Option      "HorizScrollDelta"      "111"
   Option      "TapButton1"            "1"

   Option      "ClickPad"      "true"
   Option      "EmulateMidButtonTime"   "0"
   Option      "SoftButtonAreas"   "50% 0 82% 0 0 0 0 0"
EndSection

I am currently using XFCE

I discovered a workaround, kind of crappy but it works:

Code:

#       To disable the bottom edge area so the buttons only work as buttons,
#       not for movement, set the AreaBottomEdge
#       Option "AreaBottomEdge" "82%"

What works for me is using two steps.
In first step double tap, hold and move same finger to get the item marked.
Second step is double tap marked item, hold and drag same finger.

Config is very simple:
Code:
Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "touchpad catchall"
        Driver "synaptics"
        MatchIsTouchpad "on"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"

   Option "VertEdgeScroll" "on"
   Option "TapButton1" "1"
EndSection
