Hi. The first thing I would try is to get the x-server running without any hardware acceleration.

Quote:
/etc/portage/make.conf
VIDEO_CARDS="vesa vga"

I'm not sure what the problem might be, but you may fix it here instead and remove the hardware drivers from the problem. Before you start X, delete (make a backup first) your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. X should start. It might be ugly but it should start if everything is working OK.

When trying to add nouveau, make sure that the nouveau driver AND DRI are compiled into the kernel. Here is my xorg.conf file back when I had nouveau

However, if you have the nvidia card, in my opinion (just my opinion) you might as well go from no hardware accelleration to using the nvidia drivers. Once you get them installed, they will work better. I say this because the nouveau and nivida drivers conflict with each other. So even if you get a working nouveau system, you will have to redo everything (including removing nouveau) to get the nvidia system working.

For example (and follow the resources http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVidia/nvidia-drivers and http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Uvesafb ) you will need to remove nouveau and DRI from the kernel and framebuffers to get nvidia drivers to work. Oh, and also check nvidia's site to see which driver you need: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

For additional reference here are the files in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d with everything running now:

I guess you have an Optimus graphic system?
The nVidia graphics cannot refresh the screen.

You must use the Intel Graphics at all times but can use the nVidia chip to draw the images that the Intel chip will then move to the display.

There are several threads on Optimus graphic systems on the forums that end in success. Follow a recent one.
