I have my system installed and up to date, but I cannot seem to get KDE working. In Debian and Slack, I had KDE with compositing and all, no issues. I believe I built everything here, but when logging in, I get KWin crashing, no effects, and the taskbar and what-not are in the upper-left. This is with a fresh user account, not an old one. I have an Intel Mobile 4 Series video adapter in this laptop. I did build the i915 stuff into my kernel. What should I check and what info do you want? Oh, and "eselect opengl list" only shows the X option.

Looks like kernel 3.16 hates OpenGL. Lots of people with broken GL. Is it possible to install Gentoo with kernel 3.15? Many claim that is the fix and I am OK with that. Heck, Debian has 3.2!

I finally got into the desktop and have no effects. If I attempt to enable effects KWin crashes. Here is my glxinfo output. Note that it does support DRI.

*EDIT*

GL appears to work. Gears gives me about 60fps, my refresh rate,
Code:

 ~ $ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh.  The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.301 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.699 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.898 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.700 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.699 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.699 FPS
XIO:  fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
after 5541 requests (5541 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I am going to try some other things but would still like some help.

Hi,

If your chip is a i915, you can set VIDEO_CARDS="i915 intel" in /etc/portage/make.conf. I think it doesn't support VAAPI, but XvMC. So the xvmc USE flag can be added.

After that: emerge -avuDN @world

Xorg needs this file to be created to get XVMC working:
/etc/X11/XvMCConfig
with this line inside:
Code:
/usr/lib64/libIntelXvMC.so

...and something like this in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
Code:
Section "Device"
   Identifier   "Intel(R) 945G"
   Driver      "intel"
   Option      "XvMC"      "true"
EndSection

(your identifier can be found in /var/log/Xorg.0.log)

Can't help with KDE, but it's quite safe to use the newest kernel (so it probably includes fixes). It's "gentoo unstable"... that's upstream stable normally.
To try the newest sources:
Code:
# echo "=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.17.4 ~amd64" >>/etc/portage/package.keywords

Actually it is an i965 (GM45). I do have vaapi enabled and in my global use flags. My chip does support it, according to the Gentoo Wiki. I also do not believe this is a driver OR kernel issue anymore. I have GL working perfectly IN KDE (glxgears, other GL apps), but KDE itself is crashing if I enable the effects. This tells me it is a KDE issue. I also found a few threads like the one below where it appears as though KDE is at fault since many others are reporting identical problems, but only with KDE. Not sure why desktop effects fail, but I can say that 3D games are fine.

Also, holy CRAP stuff is fast on Gentoo! Opening LibreOffice on the system in Debian takes a few seconds. First the LO window opens, then a bar make sits way across, then I am in LO. In Gentoo I see the LO window for a mere second and then I am in. The difference in speed is astounding! It really makes me wonder how much longer my old Gaming rigs would go if I could compile Windows on them like I did with Gentoo.

The kernel uses i915 as a generic term, so that's OK. Do you have VIDEO_CARDS="i965 intel" set? Most ebuilds use "intel", but media-libs/mesa has some specific stuff for "i965" as well.

The KDE story sounds familiar. I've used it for years. It's nice, and Gentoo made it modular, so you don't need to compile full blown KDE. I decided to drop it though, because of these kind of bugs, and I didn't use most applications anyway. Now I like to use a WM, with the KDE apps I really like installed separately. Using just a WM saves a lot of RAM, and speeds startup.

I also use Prelink. It was a big startup cutter on slow machines, but it's still a small effort.

Cheers!

If it wasn't for systemd, I was considering trying Gnome again, but I despise systemd. I was considering it due to Gnome allowing WAY more configuration now than it did in the past while KDE is slowly removing configuration. I loved KDE3. KDE4 was awesome, but the stupid widgets and activities do not make up for the lack of customization. I also looked at XFCE and LXDE.

Anyway I do have VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965" in my make.conf. The OpenGL screensavers and everything else works wide-open and hits my refresh-rate easily. I am almost positive that this is a KDE issue now. Damn shame, but I love my speed too much. I am still in awe (as is my assistant at the office) of how much faster this system is just by switching to Gentoo. I will wait for others to reply before I give up on this thread. If nobody can get it working with me, I will mark it solved as a KDE bug.

Woohoo! I was right! I upgraded last night and almost every KDE package wanted to update. I let it run and today ALL of the effects work. No changes to ANYTHING else. I just did "emerge-webrsync && emerge --sync && emerge -avuND @world". When it finished everything worked. I am now using KDE 4.13 however. The old version was lower (4.11?) and must have been the issue. I am happy again!
