Hey mods, can any of you change the title of this thread to the one of this post? As I wasn't the OP, I can't do it, but I feel that I've aquired some kind of ownership to the thread. As CargoDist is no new issue anymore, it would be much more informative. You can delete this post when you're done.

Might be best to start another thread, or perhaps use the "report this topic" link to get mod attention?

it may interest you that I'm running a games-overlay with the following purposes:
  • be faster and more up2date than the main tree
  • decentralized, but centralized... I think there must be a balance: split out stuff with different theme/purpose (e.g. why should toolchain ebuilds be in the same repository as games ebuilds?), but try to centralize those clearly themed overlays and allow a proper review workflow that's not as complicated as sunrise (the user overlay, which does not have any clear theme)
  • easy for users to contribute... bugzilla is not really a proper contribution platform for ebuilds
  • no games.eclass usage, because it's not properly designed, has a lot of complexity for supporting a single corner case and caused security bugs in the past... this also makes it easier for users to write games ebuilds and not worry about pitfalls like the implicit base.eclass inherit
  • allow alpha/beta ebuilds, live ebuilds etc.
  • a bit more QA than games overlays generally have
