I did a fresh install on a new SSD a month ago and I've been having two issues with KDE since, I believe both are related.

1) When I launch k3b I get this error :
Code:

No optical drive found.
K3b did not find any optical device in your system.

The output in terminal shows
Code:

osiris@sol ~ $ k3b
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QString)
Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceRemoved(QString)
osiris@sol ~ $ K3bQProcess::QProcess(0x0)
K3bQProcess::QProcess(0x0)
k3b(2401)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_projects" with KXMLGUIFactory!
k3b(2401)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_dir_tree" with KXMLGUIFactory!
k3b(2401)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_contents" with KXMLGUIFactory!
k3b(2401)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "location_bar" with KXMLGUIFactory!

I get the same issue when I run it as root. I don't think it's a permission problem but my group privs are :
Code:

osiris@sol ~ $ groups
disk wheel audio cdrom video games cdrw usb users vmware scanner lpadmin plugdev input osiris

My rc-status :

It's a SATA drive that show's up properly as /dev/sr0. I can mount the drive and read/write to it no problem. I can use cdrecord to burn an ISO image without issue (as user).
Code:

sol linux # l -al /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root root 11, 0 Dec 11 16:49 /dev/sr0

I don't know if it's a problem or not but /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd are no longer being created. I tried to linking them to sr0 and got the same results in k3b. Also tried changing the permissions of the devices.

I looked through a bunch of forums and it seems like most of the reported problems are with kernel configs and IDE/libata, or group issues. I'm using SATA AHCI so I don't think any of that applies. Here's my .config though :

When you look at solid-hardware lists it does show up towards the bottom :
Code:

Also to note : KDE has no problem mounting USB disks as the user. However putting in a CDROM will not pull it up in Device Notifier.
If I go into systemsettings -> Removable Devices -> and check "Mount on Attach" for a cdrom I have. When I put the specific CDROM in it will prompt me for root password then allow mounting. Still doesn't show up in device notifier though. (USB disks/sdcards dont require root password).

The one interesting thing that stood out above was "Object::connect: No such signal org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QString) " when running k3b or solid-harware from a terminal. I'm not sure if thats a problem. I tried googling for that and most the time it seems like people ignored that as it wasn't part of their problem.

Additionally there's another problem with KDE with the System Monitor desktop widget. When I add the "Hard Disk Space Usage" it says "No data sources being monitored". When I click on "Configure" it doesn't show up with any partitions! Interestingly the "Hard Disk I/O Monitor" works no problem and shows all available hard disks though. A screenshot of it:
http://i.imgur.com/DKZd8SE.png

I don't really have any additional troubleshooting for that, I mean it should ideally have access to it, I'm in the proper groups. This was all working fine before I did the fresh install, same versions of everything (although todate im 100% updated) and I cannot figure it out. Hopefully I've overlooked something simple.

Let me know if you have any ideas,

Thanks!
