No internet during installation on liveCD

I am trying to install Gentoo for the first time from a LiveUSB as boot option. I already wiped the partitions from my harddrive (so no more stock windows) and made a few partitions. Now I want to download the tarball and also Portage, but I am having difficulities actually connecting to the internet. I have tried net-setup for both wireless connection (were I removed encryption for now) and also through ethernet. I also tried setting up the interface eth0 myself in init.d but that interface won't recognize my commands start and stop. When I go through ifconfig and iwconfig it only show lo.

I am fairly new to this, and I haven't messed too much around with the kernel yet, so I haven't done much else than the above from when I put im the USB. I looked through lspsci -k and it does show both a Network Controller and a Ethernet Controller, but for both of them theres no kernel driver in use or kernel module.

Basically I have proceeded to point 5 in the handbook and are now stuck with no access to the internet. I am quite at a loss, I just want to use links to download some stuff. Can anyone please help me getting some net?

It sounds as if the kernel doesn't have the driver for your network chip; are you running the SystemRescue CD (moved to a USB stick, of course)? That's generally the best distro for first installs.

No I'm just running the .iso of the current x86 build linked from the handbook. That is, I let UNetbootin put it unto my USB. Is it possible to add the driver to the kernel somehow?

SystemRescueCD is gentoo based and has a lot more network drivers, system utilities... and a graphical interface with internet browser, ...
I recommand it

Thanks guys, but I need this distro. Can you help me get some ethernet working?

I tried modprobe to atl1c, atl1e and atl1 but none of them works.

You don't need Gentoo Minimal CD to install Gentoo. You can bootstrap Gentoo from any live linux.

Thing is I'm installing it on a wiped HDD. I just wanna follow the guide I have been following so far.

Can you help getting my ethernet working? I need the network interface eth0 to work. I located the module I need in the /kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/atheros folder. This contains the drivers, can I just build them into the kernel and see if the work with my network card?

Take their advice.

You can follow the Handbook perfectly well from the booted SystemRescueCD.

I will try this, but no help for my current problem? I am getting kinda frustrated no kernel module update is making anything besides lo appear on my ifconfig calls. I have tried modprobing all the related ethernet and wireless .ko drivers

If you load correct module a new device node is created, ifconfig -a will show it. But if your NIC is not supported by Gentoo install CD/DVD just get sysrescuecd as already suggested several times.

This is help for your current problem. The SystemRescueCD is a far superior installation ISO to the Gentoo Minimal Install CD. Also note that, as not a single bit of software from the installation CD actually becomes part of your installed Gentoo, it's perfectly okay. What you end up with is no less "Gentoo" than if your network card were supported by the official Minimal Install CD.
