I'm trying to follow the Xorg/Configuration instructions on the Gentoo wiki to set up the Xorg window system so I can run KDE but I'm encountering some problems. When I run startx the screen goes black for a couple seconds before I'm dumped back to the command prompt with a bunch of errors on my screen*.

Originally startx produced a blank black screen, the output I'm told to expect by the wiki. When I emerged x11-wm/twm and x11-terms/xterm (as directed), startx produced a black screen followed by a couple terminal windows, but the aspect ratio, resolution and colors were all wrong and the system seemed sluggish so I figured I need to specify my screen settings in a xorg.conf.d config file. I don't know enough to create one from scratch but I found a /etc/X11xorg.conf posted online by someone who's running the same hardware I am, so I'm using that with a couple of things commented out to not override some settings in other files. But I'm still getting errors when I run startx:

There's an optimistic part of me that hopes I can skip worrying about this now and proceed with emerging KDE, but I fear that part of me doesn't know what he's talking about.

What do you think?

* the errors are as recorded in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log; I assume they're the exact same errors as appear at the command prompt but I can't say for certain as I've had difficulty capturing the output and the text scrolls way too fast to read.

Please check the handbook / gentoo wiki about nvidia/amd/ati/intel gpu howto, how to configure your graphic card / how to set up a kernel / how to setup x.

basically you need a proper kernel with proper X and proper gpu driver.

which all depends on your hardware, the above mentioned keywords will lead you the way.

do not forget the etc make.conf file and setting your opengl implementation with eselect. anyway check the wiki first.
