Hello,

I recently upgraded my whole gentoo system, but I seem to have a lot of different issues related to Gnome.
I use the gnome fallback session.

1) When it starts it takes almost a minute before it runs the autostart programs. At that point it generates a grey screen with the message the system has crashed and I need to contact a system administrator. It also has a log off button.
But then I can just close this screen with "alt-F4" and my desktop is just under there with all the programs running. What could be causing the delay and the wrong error report?

2) Also the log of, shutdown and reboot buttons are not working:
gnome-session-quit --power-off
** (gnome-session-quit:4738): WARNING **: Failed to call Shutdown: Shutdown interface is only available during the Running phase

3) If I click the details button in the settings screen the whole system freezes and I end up with a kernel panic.

4) the options to disable the screen saver seem to have disappeared.

I was wondering if I did something really wrong, or this package is just not stable as marked? I can not find any bugs on this.
I had to unmask quite some packages to upgrade, but they all do not directly have something to do with gnome:

What did you upgrade from?

A lot of the problems I had upgrading to 3.12 is actually USE flags... but it looks like you got through all of them as it actually installed.

Usually kernel panics are due to drivers, have you updated nvidia-drivers recently (is this what you're using?)

I had a broken disk before, and before that there was a long euro holiday trip, so last update before that prob was in spring or even a bit urlyer, but I already was running Gnome 3 with systemd. But yes, there where a lot of updates indeed, and a lot of USE flags and keywords.

My kernel went from 3.10.7-gentoo-r1 to 3.14.14-gentoo.
I run nvidia-drivers-340.46 and masked all updates, because my video card is unsupported in newer versions.
Also I updated to gcc-3.8 because of some compile issues that some packages had with 3.7.

The thing is that the for the rest the system is stable. All other software runs, not kernel panics, only with this one button.
And all the broken gnome features is also a issue of course.

I remerged the whole system (world -NuDe) to make sure all packages are ok and no corruption was in the software.
This made the kernel panic issue go away and I can now open all the panels.
I also resolved the config issue with the screen saver manually.

But the other 2 issues are still the same. And specially the first one about opening the session with the long timeout and the error screen is really annoying.
The error screen I talk about, the one I can close with alt-F4 look like this: http://afaikblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/fatal-system-error-normal.png

There is no .xsession-errors beeing created or any kind of gnome session log I can find.
Any idea on how I can find some information on what is going on with this new gnome version or how to debug in this version (gnome-3.12) is welcome.

It comes down to traps and segfaults:
Code:

Oct 10 19:48:02 monster kernel: [ 6096.621342] traps: notification-da[32493] trap int3 ip:7fd563ba6643 sp:7ffffb04b7d0 error:0
Oct 10 19:48:07 monster kernel: [ 6101.310858] pool[32402]: segfault at ffffffffd81f6530 ip 00007fbaf3b52295 sp 00007fbaed5fff70 error 5 in libc-2.19.so[7fbaf3b07000+19e000]

Found some references to these kind of issues, but they all come with very weird solutions like downgrading libxcursor or issues with the gnome icon cahce:
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/40734
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2010223
But all this did not resolve it nor does it realy relate.

So I made a strace from my gnome session, I use gnome-flashback. And its waiting for 20 sec for a time out. But I have a real hard time making out of the trace log what its actually trying to connect to. And I am not sure if the trap and segfault are related to the timeout.
I really could use some help here...

And if no one is going to respond... please at least let me know what I am doing wrong in my post.
Or if there is actually someone running these updates stable with out issues.

It works for me...

I don't get the trap but I also get the segfault in pool, but no idea what that is doing, and I don't see any other strange behavior.

What exactly is forcing you to use the nonstable version of gcc 4.8.3, currently I am using 4.7.3-r1.

oh good to hear at least it should be working. I have some questions.
If you make autostart application in ~/.config/autostart like this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8247706/start-script-when-gnome-starts-up
and then you load the gnome-fallback session, how long does it take for the program to start?

And do you run fallback? I just synced today and I see they masked it, telling to pick another. This was not the case last week:
:/

The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
# /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Pacho Ramos <pacho@gentoo.org> (11 Oct 2014)
# Masked for removal in a month.
# Obsolete and unmaintained for years. You should switch
# to one of the many available alternatives like (#508854):
# - >=gnome-base/gnome-3.12 (either with standard or 'Classic' modes)
# - gnome-extra/cinnamon
# - mate-base/mate
# - xfce-base/xfce4-meta
# - ...
=gnome-base/gnome-fallback-3.8.0

Also, aren't segfaults supposed to be really really bad? As corrupt compiles/hardware/memory bad?

oh I get it, mate replaced the gnome-fallback. I installed it and everything works instantly more perfect then it ever did under gnome-fallback sins gnome came with the cluttered 3 release. Also all errors, segfaults and timeouts have disappeared and load way faster. :)
Thank you for the feedback.

also I downgraded the nvidia drivers even further. They where responsible for the instabillety / crashes.
the nvidia-drivers-340.x serrie was declared stable for my card, but apparent not.
after installing 377.25 everything was running stable and fast again. :)
