Hi ,
In a previous question I asked for help using texmaker because I was not able to enter letters such as ê, ï, â etc.
Thanks to dlaor I could solve the problem by emerging ibus-qt. I must say I am using gnome 3 as desktop environment.

Now, I am facing a new problem with œ, æ and may be some other characters.
The difference is, that this time I can get œ typing \oe and æ typing \ae. It was not the case with the ^, ¨ before.
The trouble exists even without ibus-qt.

I think it is not due to my preamble that includes:
Quote:
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[french]{babel}
because everything is OK when I use texmaker on a debian box with gnome.
I conclude that it should be caused by some missing package but even after googleing a lot, I am not able to find a solution that allows me to enter the char directly.

emerge --info texlive gives

Good to hear you solved your previous problem.

I assume that in gedit putting the æ in works?

Again the following are just shots in the dark:

Firstly your emerge --info suggests that your LANG variable is unset? What about your X11 keyboard layout, etc? As you seem to use systemd, you can show/set these using the localectl command; for me it returns
Code:
   System Locale: LANG=en_GB.utf8
       VC Keymap: us
      X11 Layout: us
     X11 Variant: altgr-intl
     X11 Options: eurosign:5

Read localectl --help or man localectl for info on how to set these variables.

Secondly, if you don't use ibus, is there a way to disable ibus completely? What happens if you kill it? I've removed ibus from my gnome-base/gnome-light dependencies, by disabling the i18n use-flag in my make.conf.

Lastly the worst suggestion: if it works in gedit then you might try a gtk+ tex-editor? I'm quite happy with latexila.

Good luck!

Yes it does.

Oh! I wasn't aware of this! I corrected it. Here is the output of localectl
Code:
localectl
   System Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
    LC_COLLATE=C
     VC Keymap: fr
     X11 Layout: fr
     X11 Variant: bepo

I need ibus because I need an input method switcher to use the Japanese language from time to time.

I have killed ibus-x11 with no change but there are other process whose name includes ibus

I didn't know about it. It 's quite the same and it works! That's great.
Eventually, it probably simplify a lot of things working with a gtk+ based editor with gnome.

I keep the question open as it is not solved but I am rather satisfied to discover latexila. Thank you again for your help.
