I would like to set up a "move on write" to slowly migrate data from one partition to another. I can find plenty about setting up copy on write, however that would leave stale and deleted files on the old partition. It would also pollute the new partition with whiteouts, which would need to be cleaned up once that partition was mounted directly.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I could set up "move on write"?

The following might work:

overlayfs upperdir in /mnt/overlay
original partition as lowerdir mounted to /mnt/old
new partition mounted to /mnt/new
overlayfs mount point /mnt/workdir

Then "rsync -av /mnt/old /mnt/new" in the background. When finished, remount overlayfs with new lowerdir /mnt/new.
