|
|
Since I didn't know where to post this, I came to the last bastion of hope
I installed Gentoo 1.4 on a IBM SCSI drive (on an Adaptec 2904CD, which is *NOT* bus-mastered).
The installation went well, but I couldn't boot the damn thing !
I tried to use XSOL to boot on my Gentoo, but XSOL doesn't see the partitions.
I configured my BIOS to boot "scsi", but there were no improvements.
When I boot from the Gentoo CD, I can see and mount the partitions.
I'll try to install the boot partition on an IDE drive, but I'm desesperate
Anyone has an idea of how to proceed ? |

Did GRUB not work for you? Most folks here are more familiar with GRUB than XOSL, I would bet. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Well, my computer wouldn't find the hdd at all, so he couldn't launch grub.
I put my boot partition on an IDE drive, to see where I can go from there.
But I then got the same problem I had when I tried to boot my Gentoo on an IDE hdd: kernel panic !
I'll have to try again on an IDE, but for now, it seems the system doesn't "see" the scsi hdd...
The error I get is:
Code: | VFS! Cannot open root device "sda3" or 08:03
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:03 |
My boot is on /dev/hda2 (XOSL is on /dev/hda1), the swap on /dev/sda2, and the root is on /dev/sda3... |

When you configured your kernel, did you make sure to add SCSI disk support as well as the driver for your host adapter? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Yes, of course (but I'll check again, though).
Still, it doesn't explain why I had the same problem on an IDE hdd... |

What filesystem types are you using, and is support for them in the kernel? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Are you sure your grub.conf is correct? Are you sure it should be sda3? |

I successfully reinstalled and launched Gentoo... but on an IDE hdd
I'm using ext2 and ext3, and they are supported by the kernel.
And I'm sure of my partitions (the definitions, that is).
I'll unplug my IDE and recompile the kernel on my SCSI, and we'll see... |
