How do you want to find that out? And: is a user using a server or workstation set up by some admin also a gentoo-user, or only if the user is aware of the system? or does the user only count when he selected gentoo willingly? do you want to count the downloaded iso images?

I downloaded two install-isos (one earlier, ony 1.1a), intalled gentoo on 3 computers so far, my wife also uses gentoo sometimes, i gave two copies of the install-cds to friends, where one of them .....

Happy Counting :twisted:

No man, it's not about ISO cd-s :-)

I thought my self: if every user will donate 1~5 dollars for Gentoo will help it very much...forgive me if i made a mistake.

ah, i see! it's all about the money ;)

How about a poll like "how much would you donate to gentoo?
* nothing, linux has to be "free"
* 1$ to 5$ once
* 1$ per installation
* 1$ per month
* just tell me where so send my money

PS: the problem with donating is: who gets the money and what for?
PPS: take a look at my posting in "international users"

That's what I asked on "international users". I'm offering the server (here in Austria), but I cannot afford to pay for the traffic all by myself. I'm willing to sponser this with another 50-100 euro per month, but that's the limit of my financial capacities.

No man,
The money should go to Gentoo (c) and they must build the server by their self.

This will make sure that all is legal and "clean"

Legal and "clean"? I don't get the point what's wrong with offering a server where to host the mirror and additional 100euro per month.

Is it illegal to make a (gentoo)-mirror :?:
What's "unclean" about that :?:

Actually I already have a gentoo-mirror running, but I'm offering this service currently only to some people I know personally, without receiving anything but their thanks for it. if this moraly questionable please tell me so, because I simply don't understand what I'm doing wrong taking the risk of costs and (probably) unhonored effort by supporting gentoo. 8O

There is nothing illegal or even immoral about setting up a Gentoo mirror. The developers have actively solicited mirrors and they're crucial to the continued success of Gentoo.

In an ideal situation, you'd coordinate everything with the developers and become an official mirror of Gentoo. But even if you just set one up on your own, without the official Gentoo blessing, that still wouldn't be illegal.

Donations, however, are always appreciated -- that's why anyone can donate to the Gentoo project simply by going to the front page of Gentoo.org and clicking on the donate button in the upper right-hand corner.

Which is not an accurate statement. There is nothing illegal or "unclean" about setting up your own mirror. I was pointing that fact out.

Furthermore, I was then agreeing with your original idea of soliciting donations to the Gentoo project.

Not sure why you got all bent out of shape. You know, they have decaffeinated brands that are just as tasty...
