Hi all,

I've been a RedHat user for several years now, but I've just
"discovered" Gentoo Linux and I'm excited by it's fast,
customizable design.

There's just one question: I'm an electrical engineer working
in ASIC design and I need to be able to run some heavy
duty (and expensive! :) ) design tools, such as ModelTech's
MTI simulator and Synopsys's Design Compiler.

These tools are only certified to run on RedHat 7.x, and I've
heard rumors that they crash or refuse to run on other distributions
(even RedHat-based distros).

Is anyone doing EDA on Gentoo, and if so was it difficult to get
the tools to run??

Thanks,

Do you have sources for these programs, or only binaries?

Only binaries. (These companies charge big bucks for their
software and would never release the source...)

Can you try running ldd on them on a RedHat system, and see what libraries they are linking against?

Thanks for the help!

Let's see...

I tried ldd on some of the Synopsys executables and I got some
weird error message about "not a dynamic executable", or something
like that.

For Modeltech Modelsim HDL simulator I got:

libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40025000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/i686/libm.so.6 (0x40029000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/libc.so.6 (0x42000000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

and for the Debussy debugger I got:

libnsl.so.1 => /lib/libnsl.so.1 (0x40025000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x4003b000)
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 => /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 (0x4003e000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/i686/libm.so.6 (0x40080000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/i686/libc.so.6 (0x42000000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)

I've got plenty of spare hard disk space. Maybe I should just install
Gentoo and try running my critical apps! What's the worst that can
happen?? :D

Statically linked, then. They should work fine.

That one should be no problem.

You will probably need to emerge lib-compat for this one.

Sounds like a good plan. The worst that can happen is that you spend some time learning how Gentoo works and then have to go back to your status quo.

Thanks for the help, rac!

I'll try it. And at the very least I'll learn more about
Linux, which is a good thing... :D

Assuming you don't have this software at home, you could make your home machine Gentoo ;)
