Hi
I'm writing this at 3 am so please excuse the bad english (and swedish )
If you look at this thread you'll see that there seems to be some interest in having a swedish forum. 14 diffrent people have posted and the thread has bee viewed about 150 times.
How would we go about setting upp a swedish forum?
Peptalk for the Swedes:

There are two ways to get a swedish forum created:
- Have two blond swedish women show up at my doorstep to plead your case personally. This guarantees you a swedish forum and probably just about anything else you want, too.
- Or, for the boring, pedestrian approach, go rally your fellow swedish Gentoo users and have them post here about how a swedish forum is really super important.

Hmm. Since I'm a computer geek option 1. is off. Sorry about that
I guess we will have to take approach number 2 |

Our puny norwegian neighbours got one. That should be a sufficient reason ;) |

Why? We have a pretty descent education here
There are many benefits of reading in english instead.
How about a #gentoo.se on some IRC network? |

I think you are right in saying that we don't need a Swedish forum because we can't speak Enlish.
It would however be nice to have a place where we could discuss issues specific to Sweden. Like how to get networking going if your ISP is Telia, Tele2 or Telenordia.
(For those of you who don't know I would say that these ISPs have about 75% of the market in Sweden.)
Tele2 and Telenordia use PPPoE and Telia use DHCP with a custom login page. Getting networking to work is kind of tough...

There is allready a IRC channel on OPN . ( Look in the bottom left corner of the gentoo main page. ) It seems to be kind of empty though.
I'd like to have a place where questions about gentoo that are specific to Sweden are answered. |

Of course there needs to be a swedish forum. Just because you and me and all the other nerds happen to be rather young people with a decent grasp of english doesn't mean everyone is. Closing out everyone that doesn't use english regularly enough to feel comfortable in asking questions in an english forum from using linux would be a really bad idea.
See alot of people would rather use swedish programs. My mom, for instance, still uses Netscape Communicator 4.x instead of Mozilla, since the translation isn't done yet. And that's not because she wouldn't know english. I can tell you that it's a quite common reaction among "normal" computer users. That's also the very reason I got involved with l10n.
I'd rather see a full page of gentoo forums in all kinds of languages where only half of them were used, than to see a "local" forum be withheld because "not many enough want one" or "you're educated enough to speak english". Sooner or later, when linux starts creeping onto the desktop of Mr and Mrs Average User, the forums will fill up.
Regards,
Mikael Hedberg (Mozilla sv-SE translation team coordinator and gentoo user) |

The question is why there should _not_ exist a swedish forum if anyone thinks that there should be one...
So please give us one! _________________ My next computer is also a Gentoo computer |

#gentoo-se @ irc.freenode.net
Sorry you already got an answer on that question
I think a swedish forum would be great, the thing with english is that it's not always that easy to express yourself. Especially when you are talking about technical stuff _________________ did i do that? |

Yes, I want a swedish forum too. If the *#¤$ norweigans can have one, we can have one too
As someone already said, there are things/problems local to swedes to discuss, like the ISP matter. |

1) If you go and take a look here you'll see that there are about 6400 registerd users of the Gentoo forums.
2) If you look at each page you'll see that the average is about one Swede per page. There are 128 pages.
1) & 2) => 2% of the registerd users of the forums are Swedish.
I don't know if all of these people wan't a Swedish forum though...
(Uber geek proving his point mathematically ) |
