|
|
Hi all,
I have been gradually plowing through a new Gentoo install, my first for this distribution. I downloaded the latest available stage 1 ISO, and compiled through stages 1 and 2. I have come to the point where I need to compile a kernel. When I'm in the menuconfig under "Processor type and features" the first line lets me set "Processor family." Well I'm doing this on an old Pentium II/400 I had lying around (no rush obviously) so I figure I'll select "Pentium II" in the menu. However it seems that each processor type has two menu entries, a plain entry and then another with "gcc3.1" appended on. I know that this version of Gentoo uses gcc 3.2 So should I treat the "gcc3.1" menu options as though they say "gcc 3.1 or later" and pick that one, or should I really be using the other option? I've compiled kernels before but this is the first time I've seen reference to compiler versions in the configuration, so it kind of threw me. I would appreciate any insight on this. Thank you for reading- |

From Michael Cohen <mjc@kernel.org>
This patch adds configure options to optimize the
kernel compile for particular architectures based
on the more specific gcc3.X architecture settings |
So I would say it means GCC 3.x, and using the 3.1 setting for 3.2 sounds good. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Sounds good for me too. I was using an old .config from my gentoo 1.2 and thus I forgot to set it as gcc 3.x. It works if you don't use it, but I think you can get more from gcc 3.2 using this option.

I take it this option appears in a Gentoo sources kernel? It isn't there under vanilla 2.4.19-r1. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Yeah, it is. It appeared as patch #18 gcc3-compile-opts for me when I emerged -r9. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
