Posted: Fri Mar 12, 2004 8:47 am Post subject: Little dual screen prob under KDE |
|
|
Hi there,
I've got a little problem with Xinerama under KDE 3.2. I'm using a Gentoo 2004.0 with 2.4 based kernel. I setup Xinerama in my XF86Config and it works well (I mean, the desktop is stretch on my two screens, no problem, no error in the log). But the Display panels of KDE 3.2 are grayed (telling my system doesn't seem to be multiheaded) and I've no Xinerama specific options if the Windows Behavior panel.
I have an AGP Radeon and a PCI nVidia TNT. I only don't know why X works well but KDE seems unable to see that Xinerama is enabled. Any idea here ?
Thanks a lot in advance ! |

did you enable all options in:
> Control Center > Devices (1st point) > Display
in the 3rd tab (rider) ? _________________ Mess with the best, die like the rest. |

Thanks for your answer but I don't have those options, they don't appear
But I think I found a solution on the KDE forums. It seems to be a problem with QT which should be compiled with the xinerama flag. KDE seems to check if the xinerama extension of QT is enabled to know if it should enable its own xinerama options.
So I will try to re-emerge QT using "xinerama" in the USE variable when I come back from work. I will tell you the results. |

better also do:
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge libsdl qt |
both is needed, and requires re-emerging when changing the xinerama flag in /etc/make.conf _________________ Mess with the best, die like the rest. |

I found that to un-grey the mutliple displays option in display properties, i had to duplicate my monitor entries in XFree86config. I have 2 x the same TFT montior, so I didn't see any point in duplicating them initially.
Once I had done this and restarted KDE I could access the multiple display properties page (your not missing much though to be honest!) |

but without the options you will miss something
if you enlarge any window to full size it is enlarged over both screens
and some more options, it's worth getting it working _________________ Mess with the best, die like the rest. |

so, to summarize this, here is my (working) XF86Config,
you will see the "double-monitor" settings,
and after having re-emerged qt and libsdl with xinerama flag enabled,
you gain access to the control center's special tab (multiple monitors),
so here it is:
Code: | Section "Module"
# Load "apm"
Load "dbe"
Load "ddc"
Load "extmod"
Load "freetype"
Load "synaptics"
# Load "Type1"
Load "speedo"
Load "glx"
Load "vbe"
EndSection
Section "Files"
# The location of the RGB database. Note, this is the name of the
# file minus the extension (like ".txt" or ".db"). There is normally
# no need to change the default.
RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
# Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (which are concatenated together),
# as well as specifying multiple comma-separated entries in one FontPath
# command (or a combination of both methods)
#
# If you don't have a floating point coprocessor and emacs, Mosaic or other
# programs take long to start up, try moving the Type1 and Speedo directory
# to the end of this list (or comment them out).

Please post us your XFree-log file as well (to be found in /var/log),
just reviewing your config file did not help me so far,
because I don't know how it works with you hardware. _________________ Mess with the best, die like the rest. |

xfreelog seems to have no heavy errors,
looking in your xfree config let me notice that you use two diffrent
grafic cards, is that correct ?
The configuration I used was optimized to one grafic card
with 2 possible plugs (for two monitors), I used this config file
to enable the two monitors for my notebook,
the standard LCD and a CRT monitor (or CRT like devices).
now to you again, are you trying to use two grafic cards,
which should display on two monitors using the same xfree ? _________________ Mess with the best, die like the rest. |

yes I am using 2 cards. Screen0 uses a Voodoo 5 AGP, Screen1 uses an ATI mach64 PCI _________________ Could it be? |

Try adding a BusID to the second card as well:
Code: |
Section "Device"
Identifier "ati"
VendorName "ATI"
BoardName "ATI Mach64"
BusID "PCI:0:17:0"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "no_accel" "no"
Option "no_dri" "no"
EndSection
|
and double-check the driver. I had a secondary Rage II with the "ati" driver, not the "fglrx" one. It was pretty slow (no surprises there), but it worked.
Also, you don't have a VertRefresh option for the V410 monitor. _________________ Gentoo Linux - Feel the speed.

hi,
just a question related (adding?) to this topic.
i am just going to setup xinerama as well:
card1: gforce2 agp
card2: voodoo3 pci
on card2 i like to run mplayer watching TV, wich is streamed from a sat receiver.
now, *additionally* i would like to insert a SB 128 PCI soundcard. so i have sound on monitor/desk1 using the onboard ViasSound, and monitor/desk2 will use the sb128
is this possible? anything i would have to take care of? |
