Not sure if always work, but share my self discovery here (first hand):-

Say we have alcohol.mdf and alcohol.mds:-

1) some .mdf files can mount like ISO;

2) if no luck, do this:-
Quote:
# bin2iso alcohol.cue -c alcohol.mdf
will create alcohol.cue we need, and then
# bin2iso alcohol.cue
will finally create an ISO that can mount!!

Hope this help.

PS. I discovered this by "diff" some .BIN files converted from .MDF files under Windows. Thus perhaps next time can just download without .MDS which yet useless under Linux. :D

If i remember my windows day correctly it is a kind of ISO format used by the program "Alcohol 120%", and as suggested it is very much like the more commen bin/cue format
btw the cue/mds file isn't needed by some windows programs, nero for example. If you open it with at editor you will see that it is a description of the format in which the "big" file i saved.
Of if it is missing the burning program just have to guess, which it often does a good job at.

Anybody knows whether it's possible to mount .bin files without having to convert them to .ISO first. It should be posible to write a kernel module to handle the filesystem.

Another way to get an MDS file is to use DVDShrink and a filesystem with a 2GB file size limit (like FAT32). It will create FOO.I01... FOO.I0n and FOO.MDS.

Under Linux, just
Code:
cat FOO.I0? > FOO.ISO
and toss the MDS.

I would like to let you all know that this works 100%! I tested it myself earlier today. Thanks for the little tip!

The #2 method worked like a charm for the Doom3 backup CDs I had. Thanx a lot!

Doesn't work for me. It says the file is too large (it's a DVD image). However, I have mounted the image :)
