Hi,

I'm in the middle of installing Gentoo 1.4 RC1 using the great installation guide. Unfortunately, I can't get grub to work. I am supposed to do:

Quote:
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

Since I partitioned according to the guide's recommendations (I'm pretty new to linux, no unneccessary risks  ), "hd0,0" and "hd0" should be correct. But I used reiserfs on the boot partition (and mounted it with the "notail" option), because I was unable to mount ext2/ext3 filesystems (error message: "to many filesystems mounted").

After doing "root (hd0,0)", grub says: "Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x83"

And "setup (hd0)": "Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition"

Any suggestions? After solving the crazy problem with procps during emerge system, I really hope this is going to be the last major quirk. :)

Thanks guys.

I am having the exact same problem.

*edit* I just tried to umount /boot and got the error:
Code:
umount: /boot: device is busy

was going to try to umount boot and mount it again to make sure the -o notail took hold properly. but I was also having the problem when setting hda1 as ext2 or 3.

shazbot, now using the mount command shows no partitions mounted.

er, either i've missed something the last 6 times i've tried to install this (which is more than likely) or something is seriously wrong... or both.

Ok, this thread mentions the same problem. I rebooted and restarted the installation using EXT3.

Please modify the installation guide until the problem with grub is fixed!
