I have a gf3 and am wondering what the best way would be to config X.

xfree86 4.2.0 supports gf3, but when I run xf86config - and it asks me to choose a video adapter what best suits my video card, all I can find is "geforce".

is this right ? is there no specific entry for gf3 etc?

what I have done is choose "geforce" from the list and just install the nvidia drivers - everything works well.

however, am I getting the full potential out of my gf3 ? or is this wasted due to lack of configuration ?

any assistance to help me understand this would be most appreciated :)

The only info I have comes from http://www.xfree.org/current/Status22.html:
Support (accelerated) for the Riva 128, 128ZX, TNT, TNT2 (Ultra, Vanta, M64), GeForce (DDR, 256), Quadro, GeForce2 (GTS, Ultra, MX), GeForce3, and Quadro2 is provided by the "nv" driver.

yeah, so according to that, cards up to (and including) gf3 are supported by xfree 4.2.0, but the quadro cards only by the nv driver

so am I doing something wrong, or is this how it's supposed to be...

Make sure that you have emerged nvidia-glx, and nvidia-kernel, now update you XF86Config-4 to read:
Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier      "NVIDIA GeForce 3"
        Driver  "nvidia"
EndSection

Make sure you have the NVdriver module loaded prior to starting X, put it in /etc/modules.autoload.
