When trying to boot into the newly installed box, the kernel panics as follows:
Code:

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda4" or unknown-block(0,0)
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

My silo.conf looks like this:
Code:

partition = 1
root = /dev/hda4
timeout = 30
image = /boot/vmlinux
        label = linux

I have dev fs compiled into the kernel.

And of course I can mount /dev/hda4 when I boot with the LiveCD.

Any ideas?

Erik

My first guess would be that you didn't build support for the filesystem on hda4 into the kernel. If you did, the kernel isn't detecting it right for some reason.

What filesystem is on hda4?

The filesystem is built into the kernel and not as module and it is ext2. Nothing fancy.

Show us the partition table from /dev/hda

Does Blade use openprom?
Also make sure that the size of Kernel is under the max for your platform.

I had the same exact error happen to me trying to boot up an older computer (k2.6.3-r1). But I did notice in the dmesg it mentioned that the bios was reporting the IDE interface was disabled (when it wasn't) 2.4 kernels seem ok.

For the record the system I was working on had a 430FX chipset (original PIIX) Socket 5 pentium with a Phoenix Bios, onboard Cirrus Logic video. Not a SPARC but the errors could be related.

Oh, how big is the drive you are using?

The machine boots fine using 2.4.25, but I'd really like to get it working under 2.6

I solved my issue by disabling vector IRQs and enabling "generic IDE" (Even though I had PIIXn enabled, odd)

I had determined what had happened was that it did not link a device to the drive so as far as the kernel was concerned, it did not exist.

The blade uses an ALi PCI chipset. So make sure ALi support is enabled for the IDE bus.
