IMHO is PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) one of the most unclear parts of the current Gentoo distro. I've tried more than once to understand the principles, but I still don't understand it.
I really like it if somebody write some clear documentation about it. A bit in the style of the other Gentoo doc's, which are very clear.

I know this isn't the Gentoo style you were talking about, but http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/pam/ has quite a bit of information about PAM. PAM is pretty widely accepted, the only popular distro that I can think of that doesn't support PAM out of the box is Slackware.

Hehe, I grow up with Slack. And my LFS playbox also don't have PAM. It's something new for me :)

In the Gentoo security doc I found also some info about PAM.

Thanks

Slack is my favorite binary distro. I also did the LFS deal before Gentoo, first thing I did before compiling stuff like ssh and proftpd was add Linux-PAM.
