Hi,
I'm having a strange problem with my network.
I installed Gentoo 1.4 on a celeron, with a Realtek 8139 network card.
Everything worked ok. I bought an Athlon XP and a ECS K7S6A motherboard with the sis745 chipset. Before the change I recompiled my kernel with support for Athlon processors. At boot everything except network worked.
The strange thing is that the card is found as eth0, but it won´t take the dhcpcd command. If I do
:dhcpcd eth0, it takes a while, the command finishes but dhcp isn't on.
I recompiled the kernel a couple of times bot nothing changed. Then I tried the gentoo 1.2 iso and it finds the card and now it will accept dhcpcd, and the network is there.
I read a post on geento mailing list about someone else having the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas? What am I doing wrong? Is my kernel lacking some functionality?

If it works with the kernel on the install CD, you can compare your kernel's configuration file (in /usr/src/linux/.config), with the .config file used to build the install CD. If you can find the key difference, and can spare a moment to let us know, it will maybe help other people with your problem.
Welcome to the Gentoo forums, by the way. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Same problem here except its from the installed system of 1.2 downloaded from the net. Some times I will be able to fire up no problem but sometimes I even LOSE the lease on my address prematurely? Im on a Road Runner system here in Maine and usually its pretty good. (800+ KB/sec download) But recently the above mentioned crap occurs. Im not sure if its the new Toshiba modems they sent in the mail or Gentoo's DHCPCD thngy. Odd no? |

Ok, got the answer.
I needed to enable the "mmapped IO" option in the kernel
Don´t know what it means or what it does but it solved my problem
Just felt like sharing.......
