I have come into a neglected Origin 2000 :D , and wanted to know if anyone has ever tried to install gentoo on one. Any tips, etc welcome.

I haven't tried it, but I think it is possible. Linux does boot on Origin 200, and I believe that makes it possible on the Origin 2000, but I haven't tried. You might want to checkout http://www.linux-mips.org for information to see if the system does boot, and if it does, you might try checking out a 2.6 kernel from linux-mips.org CVS and see if it'll boot on the machine (requires a cross-compiler, etc..).

Thanks, I will give it a go after I clean out the several years of accumulated dust :x . I think I may give the gentoo experimental stages for MIPS a shot on it, or maybe just do a reinstall of IRIX on it, since I have the disks, anyone have any advice either way? Also, the current configuration is such that it can only be connected to via a serial terminal. Is there any way to get graphics to function on these machines (I am completely new to SGI systems)?

The graphics systems is unlikely to be supported, but I am not sure. I don't even know what graphics systems are in an Orgin 2000, but there remains a high possibility of them not working.

The MIPS stages labeled "mips4" on my dev site will be the ones to use, as an Origin 2000 likely has processors that meet this mips specification (R500, R10000, R12000, etc..). For a kernel/netboot, you'll most definitely need a 2.6 kernel. You can find out how to pull down a CVS HEAD snapshot from the linux-mips CVS via that site. For a netboot, I have in the netboot folder on my dev site an initrd file which is just the root userland that the netboot uses. Mix that in with a kernel, and you'll have your own netboot image. There is an option in the mips menuconfig that allows you to embed an initrd into the kernel binary.

I'm willing to bet you'll need to build the kernel as 64bit, meaning you will need a mips64 kernel crosscompiler. If you have a Gentoo x86 system, emerge the "crossdev" package, and then run a command like this:

Code:
# crossdev --arch=mips64 -u -k --vgcc=3.3.3 --vbinutils=2.14.90.0.7-r4 -p

That will invoke crossdev, which will do some processing, and it'll spit out a screen of data indicating the type of toolchain it will build, the versions of packages, etc.. The --vgcc and --vbinutils options force a specific version of the toolchain. If you are satisfised with the available settings, re-run the same command without the "-p" (stands for --pretend) to actually build the cross-compiler. It should run to completion without any errors, but there's always the possibility that something can go wrong.

Once you have a viable cross-compiler, make sure it's bin/ folder is in your PATH (PATH=/home/crossdev/mips64/bin:${PATH}), and then you should be able to use that cross-compiler to build a 2.6 kernel. In the linux-mips 2.6 menuconfig, make sure you have 64-Bit Code checked off at the top of menuconfig, select your machine type as Origin200/2000/Onyx2, and include 32-bit binary compatibility under the Executable Files formats screen (o32 only, n32 isn't supported in gentoo), then you can build the kernel with this make command:

Code:
# make ARCH=mips CROSS_COMPILE=mips64-unknown-linux-gnu- vmlinux.64

That, in most cases, should work. You may or may not encounter an issue with the 2.6 mips Makefile, I believe it tries to pass 32-bit generating commands to binutils during linking phases. If so, you will need to edit the arch/mips/Makefile, find the "gas-abi" variables (near the top) under the CONFIG_MIPS64 define, and change it from 32 to 64.

Hopefully this all helps, but I can't promise anything. If you do make any progress, let me know here. If you use IRC, you might also find help from #mipslinux on irc.freenode.net about these class of machines (linux-mips IRC channel), and the gentoo mips channel at #gentoo-mips.

Thanks for the advice Kumba, I have gotten it booted under the original IRIX installation, just to make sure it wouldn't go up in flames. Now, back to the noobness - since I have access to the CDROM I am assuming a netboot won't be necessary. Now my question is, if I was to use one of the mips4 stages, will it progress pretty much as it would on a pc or are there some additional steps involved?

Ok, First question, how many processors and how much RAM does this beast have? The Origin2000 (desk side) can have as many as 8 processors in it. As far as graphics goes, you are SOL. The Origin 2000 is a server only. If you had an Onyx system, that has multiple graphics pipes. Nothing says you can't remote an X display back to another box however :-)

The system is based around the concept of ccNUMA, by the way. Cache Coherent Non Uniform Memory Access is what that stands for. Any linux kernel that you install on it will require NUMA to be enabled.

The specs are 2 gigs RAM, 3 functioning 250 MHz R10K procs, on 2 node boards 1 9 gig SCSI HDD. This is one of the desksides. I am currently burning the install CD's, and will post back when I get something more to post.

I tried Kumba's directions, the toolchain seemed to build properly, and upon configuring and attempting to compile, i get the following (long post):

Ok, something isn't liked in your kernel sources. The system thinks it is a different emulation than your libraries are compiled...

It's the way the Makefile is rigged. Most of the linux-mips people use older toolchains, I guess they need the setup in the Makefile as is for those toolchains, which isn't the same for newer toolchains.

The trick is to tweak gas-abi under CONFIG_MIPS64 in arch/mips/Makefile to read "64" instead of "32".

There is also a -oformat $(32-bfd) hardcoded into the Makefile farther down that needs changing.

Alternatively, sign up to the gentoo-mips mailing list and trade emails with Chris Stach, whose also got an Origin 2000 and is trying to boot Gentoo on it. He's got a diff to current mipscvs sources (2.6.4 iirc) that gets him some progress.

Start of the thread:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=gentoo-mips&m=107901733108001&w=2

Post with patch to mipscvs sources:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=gentoo-mips&m=107913216624461&w=2

---

Other resources include joining #mipslinux on irc.freenode.net (and #gentoo-mips if you want to hang with the rest of us). #mipslinux is the IRC home of the primary linux-mips kernel hackers and can probably offer advice. You can also sign up to the linux-mips mailing list and post there too if IRC is not a viable option (or do both).

Thanks again Kumba, I patched the kernel, and it compiles fine when I do not build the initrd right into the kernel, and if I do (using the one of your dev site, initrd-20040303.gz) I recieve the following:

Code:
LD      arch/mips/ramdisk/built-in.o
mips64-unknown-linux-gnu-ld: arch/mips/ramdisk/ramdisk.o: ABI is incompatible with that of the selected emulation
File in wrong format: failed to merge target specific data of file arch/mips/ramdisk/ramdisk.o
make[1]: *** [arch/mips/ramdisk/built-in.o] Error 1
make: *** [arch/mips/ramdisk] Error 2

is there anything that makes the initrd's 64/32 bit dependant?

I will try the IRC channels later today to try and figure this out

:Dfinally some progress, yet more problems on netbooting that Origin 2000: I got it to obtain an IP and the kernel from my server, but I get a message like:

Range check failure: Section start 0xa80000010001c000, size 0x2f9730Section would overwrite an already loaded program.Unable to exectute ... not enough space

I did this with bootp():,bootp():/tftpboot/tftpboot/vmlinux.64 and others, same message. Strangely, I could not get tftp to allow the origin to obtain vmlinux.64 without having it in a subfolder of /tftpboot...I have seen some others online having this problem, but could not find a solution. My kernel is like 7.1 megs, not sure if this could be the trouble. Anyone know how to get around this?
