Xfree no longer free ?

Let's not bother about XFree86 any longer. It's obsolete stuff from the unix stone age anyway, too arrogant and complicated. Better let's try to develop something new that's really in the spirit of Linux. What about Fresco?

oh, I spoke about XFree86, the underlying graphical system, not about KDE or Gnome.

freedesktop AFAIK is a replacement for xfree...it runs underneath kde or gnome...like xfree currently does.

I think freedesktop.org is a collaboration zone for Gnome, KDE, and any other Linux desktop related project. I do not think it is not an X server.

However, freedesktop.org is also the site that hosts an alternative X server to XFree, namely "xserver." xserver has gotten a lot of praise lately for having true transparency, being faster, developed faster, etc. I think it is what you are looking for.
