Since this is the version in portage, I was going to try it out. How is this version? How does it compare to the newest? Are there any guides for WineX for Gentoo? Does WineX still Wine things such as Photoshop?

Which ebuild are you referring to?

Code: Select all

*  app-emulation/winex
      Latest version available: 3000
      Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of downloaded files: 0 kB
      Homepage:    http://www.transgaming.com/
      Description: Winex - fake ebuild!
      License:     Aladdin

*  app-emulation/winex-cvs
      Latest version available: 3000
      Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
      Size of downloaded files: 0 kB
      Homepage:    http://www.transgaming.com/
      Description: Winex - fake ebuild!
      License:     Aladdin
There is still winex-transgaming, but that requires you to register with TransGaming.

You can probably still find ebuilds for winex-cvs around in Gentoo fan sites, but the non-commercial versions are no longer available in Portage.

If you were to lay hands on a 3.0 commercial version, it still would be a bit of a waste compared to the current status of regular wine.
I don't think that even the 3.3 version is worth buying. The gap between wine and winex has been greatly reduced in the last months regarding gaming support.
Hello.

So using WineX wouldn't offer enough for me to use it over regular Wine?

If you're looking to use programs like photoshop, look at codeweavers Crossover Office. It has support for a lot of those types of programs (MS Office, Photoshop, Quicken). It costs about 50 bucks and has a trial version.

WineX is primarily gaming. It has better support than wine for Direct X and a lot of games installers and copy protection which don't work in regular wine. As far as I understand it, Transgaming has to license those technologies, which is why it costs money.

You know linux has a eqiuvlent (sp?) of photoshop called Gimp. Unless you are a hard-core photo editor doing it for a living, you will probably find gimp to be perfect, I know I do and I liked photoshop a lot. Besides the learning curve it is a nice program. Defiantly (sp?) worth a look.

Searching Ravenshield didn't bring back any results on transgaming's website, but morrowind looks to be supported. I don't know if it works in regular wine. If you want to run photoshop you will have to buy Crossover Office, I don't know about dvdxcopyxpress.

So, if you don't want to spend the money to get those windows apps working, I'd suggest either switching to linux native programs that do the same job (can't do that for the games, obviously) or keeping a windows partition around.
