Ok, here's the deal. I read the updating guide for Gentoo 1.4 and thought I'd give it a go. I'm however getting some odd errors just after the second command listed there. It's the "emerge -u world" that's giving me probs. Frankly I have no idea what it's trying to tell me but here's the output:
# emerge -u world
Calculating world dependencies \
!!! Error: Couldn't find match for || in sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.3
So.. ehm... Couldn't find match for what exactly and shouldn't that be just "sys-apps/baselayout" without the "-1.8.3" at the end?
Anyway, enlighten me please! =)

I would suggest running "emerge rsync" and trying again.

| "emerge -u portage" first has been known to resolve this issue in many other instances. |
