hello, I found one other message about this, but I followed the instructions that were posted and had no luck. I can log into X and use fluxbox or enlightenment, but only as Root. I only have one other user so far (uglyman) and I added it to the wheel group.

when I run startx as uglyman there would be a series of long pauses followed by the message xauth: timout in locking authority file /home/uglyman/.Xauthority.
after three times the NVidia logo shows and then the X desktop... for a few seconds and then it exits back to bash and shows the message one more time.

The other thread said to copy this file (.Xauthority) from /root
This didn't change anything, so I ran chown on it and gave it to uglyman.

Now when I run startx as uglyman it does the same as before but doesn't exit.... it still shows the error message (xauth: ..... blah blah) three times and one more after I exit the X session.

any help?

thanks,
uglyman

When I log in as root I can run
startx

to get X going with fluxbox

when I login as uglyman I can avoid the error messages if I run:
xinit -- /usr/bin/X11/X -auth /home/uglyman/.Xauthority

but otherwise I have the same problems as I mentioned before.

by the way I learned this from a link provided in a thread I found when
searching for more info on this here. Thanks to whoever posted it.

well guys I am sure you are tired of hearing me solve my own problems, but I did it again.
first I got rid of my user account:

userdel uglyman
rm -rf /home/uglyman

then I added a new one

useradd -g wheel -m uglyman

problem solved.
It appears that I messed up the permissions to my own user dir when I created it the first time.
It had been so long since I had created on I couldn't remember how to do it automatically.
so I created the directory and ran chown on it and used usermod to set it.

I am not sure where exactly I went wrong other than the fact that this is just a stupid way to
do it. and a week or so had passed so I had forgotten I did all of that and couldn't figure out
why it wasn't working.

this also fixed the fact that mozilla wouldn't run if I was logged in as uglyman.... apparently
it wasnt able to create the profile directory it needed. ---stupid----stupid----stupid----

Oh well, live and learn I guess

thanks
uglyman
