Command 'emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware' failes

Command 'emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware' failes

Hello forum!

I want to change from Ubuntuto Gentoo, so I followed the steps in the AMD Handbook.

Everything was alright, but the command

Code: Select all

emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware
failed.

I was told to send the following outputs, from

1)

Code: Select all

emerge --info '=sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.12.58::gentoo
and from

2)

Code: Select all

emerge -pqv '=sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.12.58::gentoo
Here are the outputs:

1)

Code: Select all

Hello and welcome.

Can you please also provide the output of emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware?

 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

[ebuild  N     ] sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.12.58  USE="debug initramfs strip -experimental (-generic-uki) -hardened -modules-compress -modules-sign -savedconfig -secureboot -test -verify-sig"

[ebuild  N     ] sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20250808  USE="dist-kernel initramfs redistributable -bindist -compress-xz -compress-zstd -deduplicate -savedconfig (-unknown-license)"

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

I\ve choosen Yes....

How does the command fail? There has been no error shown to help us help you.

As a secondary topic, the only sign of concern is

Code: Select all

!!! CONFIG_PROTECT is empty
CONFIG_PROTECT should not be empty unless you plan on allowing updates to blindly overwrite any configurations.

Just a clarification which may be confusing.

Code: Select all

 * IMPORTANT: 2 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

 * IMPORTANT: 3 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.
Has nothing to do with the installation of the sys-kernel/linux-firmware package. It is a general notice that some configuration needs to be updated. Run etc-update to see what needs to be done.

For more information about CONFIG_PROTECT, read the wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/CONFIG_PROTECT

Thanks for the clarification!

Code: Select all

(chroot) livecd / # etc-update
Scanning Configuration files...
Exiting: Nothing left to do; exiting. :)
According to the output everyth8ing should be alright...

So I replaced the CONFIG_PROTECT line with the following content:

Code: Select all

CONFIG_PROTECT="/var/bind"
Now etc-update updated one file:

Code: Select all

Replacing /etc/portage/package.use/uki with /etc/portage/package.use/._cfg0000_uki
Now the installation is running again, this maybe takes some time....

For most systems, you should leave CONFIG_PROTECT unset, and let Portage assign the standard non-empty value for it. Is there a reason you want Portage to be able to automatically overwrite the normally protected content under /etc?

There is no need to set CONFIG_PROTECT by yourself. If you have set it in your make.conf conf please remove it. portage will set this for you. If you then get the warning about being empty, then something else is wrong.

You did not provide the complete output if the command you used. It is only a part of it. For long output, please use something like https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Wgetpaste

Sorry for the late answer. I've saved the output to a file, size is 47 MB, so I'll send only the last few lines. If You need also the messages of the successful compilations, I"ll send them also.
