i wonder where this option is coming from - it's removed from my fstab since deprecation.

Maybe the message is for your root filesysten, and it's generated during initramfs phase?
Check your rootfsflags or your initramfs generation settings?

It's expected that `attr2` still shows in /proc/mounts, that's a red herring.
