Can't emerge vmware-modules with 6.16.1

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

Can't emerge vmware-modules with 6.16.1

Here is emerge --info.

Code: Select all

# emerge -pqv '=app-emulation/vmware-modules-17.6.3-r1::pf4public'
[ebuild   R   ] app-emulation/vmware-modules-17.6.3-r1  USE="strip -dist-kernel* -modules-compress -modules-sign"
Here is the build log.
The build log complains about not finding driver-config.h. I do have two such on my system.

Code: Select all

$ locate driver-config.h
/opt/vmware/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmware-host-modules-workstation-17.5.1/vmmon-only/include/driver-config.h
/opt/vmware/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmware-host-modules-workstation-17.5.1/vmnet-only/driver-config.h
Any hints on how to install vmware-modules will be gratefully received.

[WORKAROUND] While I'm still not able to install vmware-modules except in ancient kernels, I have finally given up VMware for VirtualBox and am grateful to rab0171610 for "pushing me over the edge": see this forum post. [/WORKAROUND]

VMware is known to known to break when newer kernel versions are released. You have to continue to use older kernel versions that are known to work with that version of VMware or wait until they release a patch to work with newer kernel versions. I find VMware unstable on Linux for this among other reasons. VMware works better for Windows users. For Linux, VirtualBox is generally more reliable.
For the future, when using ebuilds from someone's personal overlay (pf4public in this case), it is better to contact the overlay maintainer about problems encountered with the ebuild.

Maybe this can help.

Code: Select all

mkdir -p /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/vmware-modules-17.6.3-r1

cd /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/vmware-modules-17.6.3-r1

wget -O linux6_15.patch "https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/plain/linux6_15.patch?h=vmware-workstation"
wget -O linux6_16.patch "https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/plain/linux6_16.patch?h=vmware-workstation"

emerge -1av app-emulation/vmware-modules
Hope that helps you. This is what I did for my "Linux version 6.16.4-zen1 (root@laptop) (gcc (Gentoo 14.2.1_p20250301 p8) 14.2.1 20250301, GNU ld (Gentoo 2.44 p1) 2.44.0) #9 ZEN SMP Wed Sep 3 00:00:15 EDT 2025" kernel.
