I have a PC with intel i915 graphics. SDDM is the display manager.
Wayland desktop fails to log in but X is OK.
I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but I somehow hacked /usr/share/sddm/scripts/wayland-session and got the following log when /usr/bin/startplasma-wayland is executed.
Code: |

I'm not 100% sure, but looks like SDDM doesn't set QT_QPA_PLATFORM.
It looks like you can run SDDM itself in wayland too. You could try it?

Try as a new user.
Also, are you running a VNC server either on its own or as a service?
Are you running stable or testing packages?
Check your environment variables for anything you may have set in the past that might be causing issues. You can use 'env' or 'printenv' to output to terminal.
Make sure you are not inadvertently running another compositor or remnants of one from previous setups.
Check if a log file is present (~/.local/share/sddm/wayland-session.log).
Try bypassing SDDM to launch wayland session from command line:
Code: | startplasma-wayland |
If that doesn't work try setting environment variables first:
Code: | export KWIN_COMPOSE=Q |
and/or:
Code: | export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland |
|

Hi Zucca,
I followed the instructions in your link, and yes, SDDM did work with Wayland.
But with Wayland SDDM, a Wayland session still cannot be created (logging in doesn't work.).
Furthermore, after quitting an X session (logging out), SDDM log in screen is not displayed. Instead, black screen.
Another thing is, the Wayland SDDM log in screen appears in the first console rather than the usual second console. |

That had been a new install and new user. I didn't try another new user.

No.

Stable.

Yes, it is. Same as my hacked log.

Try bypassing SDDM to launch wayland session from command line:
None of them works, no matter if I set the environment variables, or whether sudo is used.
The message I got was
org.kde.startup: not a reply org.freedesktop.Locale1 QDBusMessage(type=Errorservice="", error name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown", error message="The name org.freedesktop.locale1 was not provided by org.service.files".signature="s", contents=("The name org.freedesktop.locale1 was not provided by any .service files") )

Unfortunately, the output you are seeing is typical when not able to launch a Plasma Wayland session via SDDM so it is not very informative. Nothing particular stands out from what I can discern. The good thing is that it is only affecting your ability to launch Plasma Wayland and not X, that helps limit the scope somewhat.
I have only ever had this happen under Nvidia graphics. In those cases the user did not set DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) kernel mode setting (nvidia-drm.modeset=1 kernel parameter or options nvidia-drm modeset=1 via modprobe). The other time I was missing some egl related packages (i.e egl-wayland, egl-gbm, eglexternalplatform, etc.) But you said you are using i915 and not Nvidia nor hybrid graphics.
The only other scenario where I have seen this is with a bug in Mesa and usually a version roll back fixes it until it is addressed upstream.
You said you are using stable and no other users are reporting the same issue en masse, so that's not likely.
I would double check that you have your video drivers setup and installed correctly. You likely do, but it would not hurt to check, you may have missed something that seemed insignificant but can cause problems later. That is particularly relevant since this is a new install and not an established system with a history of reliability. For example, when working through the wiki, make sure you are using the VIDEO_CARDS="i915" vs VIDEO_CARDS="intel" only if it is recommended for your graphics card. Most modern intel graphics cards would use 'intel'. Also just make sure you have all necessary firmware installed.
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel
At this point you should give us some information on your graphics card via a command of your choice, lspci or inxi, etc.
Also post your emerge --info. Sometimes problems can be due to unnecessary or restrictive use flags, user overrides, package masks, not using an appropriate profile etc. |

My /etc/portage/make.conf has
Code: |
VIDEO_CARDS="intel i915"
|
Do I need to remove intel from it? It does sound to me like this is only affecting X, not Wayland.
Firmware is built into kernel for my iGPU. There's missing firmware for my Ethernet, which doesn't seem to hurt, and is irrelevant.
I'll need to get back home to give you lspci and merge --info.
My guess is it's related to permissions in /tmp or /run. My vague recollection is I had some changes to the root filesystem. I'll need to get back home to give you more details. Do you think the following symptom is related to this issue.

It looks like you can run SDDM itself in wayland too. You could try it?
See here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SDDM#Kwin |
Hi Zucca,
I followed the instructions in your link, and yes, SDDM did work with Wayland.

Also post your emerge --info. Sometimes problems can be due to unnecessary or restrictive use flags, user overrides, package masks, not using an appropriate profile etc. |

I have -xattr in my USE flags. Is it an issue? |

Have you explicitly set qt5 and qt6 USE-flags? That just looked odd.
EDIT: Do you have dev-qt/qtwayland installed? _________________ ..: Zucca :..

Why exactly? That's default for desktop profile. |

I somehow recalled something about conflicts when both are enabled. _________________ ..: Zucca :..

That would be 1) an ebuild bug, which you can never rule out, with overlays and stuff, or 2) people not knowing what profiles are (or which one would be good for them).
Not being able to have Qt5 and Qt6 at the same time would be a fundamental problem - just imagine that transition period. |

My /etc/portage/make.conf has

Do I need to remove intel from it? |
I don't know if it makes a difference or not. Your card is Intel Corporation HD Graphics 610, which is a successor to Skylake (Generation 9). Yours is a Kaby Lake I believe which should make it a generation 9.5.
https://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-HD-Graphics-610-GPU-Benchmarks-and-Specs.257794.0.html
Unless I am misunderstanding the wiki, under the Feature Support table in the last column on the right for Gen 9.5 VIDEO_CARDS it says to use "intel". I have a Thinkpad with a Comet Lake, I used "intel" per the wiki and did not have any issues.
It also explains later under the X Drivers section to use "intel" for Generation 4 and higher.
Code: | FILE /etc/portage/package.use/00video Gen 2 and Gen 3
*/* VIDEO_CARDS: -* intel i915
FILE /etc/portage/package.use/00video Gen 4 and higher
*/* VIDEO_CARDS: -* intel |
That is if I am understanding it correctly. I try to comply with the wiki to avoid complications.
But it sounds like you may be having other configuration issues that are more pressing at the moment but I wanted to go back and address your previously posted question. |
