|
|
Hello
Last week I updated nvidia driver to the 570 version as part of the regular update and after that the gnome desktop shows app windows empty and unresponsive. This happens only when I make external monitor as the primary display. Things work normally when laptop is the primary display. This is very odd! Also this behavior is shown not by all apps but certain few. e.g. nautilus, settings, Gnome Text Editor etc. show empty windows but Firefox, console etc work fine.
Here is the link to the screenshot - https://postimg.cc/4HQJRB2Q
Anyone has the same issue?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you!

I don't use gnome nor have a similar setup, but I heard there's oddities with gtk4's new vulkan backend (that is used by default now) and nvidia 570, such as higher cpu usage and perhaps other unexpected issues.
Perhaps a thing to try until fixed would be either USE=-vulkan on gui-libs/gtk or export GSK_RENDERER=ngl to override the default of =vulkan when starting applications. A last resort would be GSK_RENDERER=cairo albeit that's mostly intended for testing (think(?) this mostly removes hwaccel, so not too great).
Haven't rechecked the thread for exact posts but there's mention of this in nvidia's 570 feedback thread:
https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/570-release-feedback-discussion/321956
Edit:
Also, have you tried ~testing nvidia-drivers-570.133.07? Changelog doesn't mention fixing something that sounds like your issue, so I doubt it'd help, but if it does I'd hasten its stabilization (albeit that was due soon either way).
If the GSK variable helped (or USE=-vulkan), it's also possible that ~testing gtk-4.16.13 could help, changelog mentions few fixes in GSK but they don't "sound" related. GTK's issue tracker may have something, but I haven't searched.
If everything failed, may want to stay on nvidia-drivers-550.x for now (branch is still supported, getting new releases, and is entirely fine to use for a while). |

Hello Ionen,
Thanks for responding.
I tried USE=-vulkan and export GSK_RENDERER=ngl and it didn't help. I also tried ~testing for nvidia-drivers-570.133.07, that too didn't help.
Finally as you suggested, I downgraded to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-550.144.03 and the problem got resolved and everything now works normally! I will wait for the latest package to stabilize before installing, so I have masked it.
Thanks a lot for your help! |
