I'm looking at buying an AMD64 3200+, 1GB mem, 160GB HD, with a ATI RADEON 9600 graphics card, with a 17" LCD. I'm wanting to set it up with linux and a friend pointed me to gentoo.

So my question is, what is there a LiveCD distribution for AMD64? If not what one do I use?

I used the stage1 from here ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/experimental/amd64/stages

This will be of some help;

http://dev.gentoo.org/~brad_mssw/amd64-tech-notes.html

I also had to do this to boot the CD, but once installed it was fine.

- disable "Legacy USB Device" in my BIOS
- boot using "nofb idle=poll nousb"

Carefull with the radeons...they cause their own issues...nVidia actually has 64-bit drivers though...

Thanks thumper. I can see I will have fun installing Gentoo :)

secondshadow: yeah I read in some of the other threads. I will have to have a better look before I do any installation.

Actually, let me correct myself: They have their own issues in XFree 4.3.0. I'm using 4.3.99 and they work just fine, the builtin Radeon drivers that is. No 3d yet, but 2d is all I really want at this point as nothing is linked against 64-bit 3d libs yet.

any opengl game you can compile from source will probably work. let's just say, gltron, for example. or the opengl xscreensavers. there's quite a bit that will use opengl if you think about it.

but you're thinking about commercial opengl games, mostly. i think it's just a matter of time before id makes a 64-bit q3a release, even though (afaik) they haven't specifically announced plans to do so.

america's army is expected to have a 64-bit release soon, too.

These forums are great for helping with new install, so just ask here, politely of course :) and help will arrive.

Don't expect a full gui install though, but its not that hard once you get the idea

Agree with a previous poster, unless you really *must* have ATI, ditch it and go for the fastest NVIDIA. Their drivers are 64bit accelerated and stable (for me anyway)

I'm not a big game fan actually, so 3D Acceleration is not high on my list, of course it would be nice.

This box will be more of a toy, and a dev station (I work on the J2EE platform at work, and want a machine that I can do stuff on at home), and hopefully I can finally move my domain name to it as well.

As for no fancy gui, that's fine, I'm sure I'm dumb enough and ugly enough to stuff it up the first time  At least I still will have my WinXP laptop to log on to the net to find out what to do.

Thanks for all the comments.

I'm with you there. I almost never play games on my primary workstation -- but I do have another machine (the wife's) that has WinXP (aka "Wintendo") on it, so I jump on that one when I feel like gaming.

Everything else I have is "dangerously dedicated" (that's a FreeBSD term, but as a joke I apply it to any computer I own that is Wintel-free).

:)

Well i have my PC now, and in the process of setting it up. Only problem is that I haven't been able to set up a network to have both the WinXP and my new machine access my DSL. In the end, I opened up the online installation guide on my WinXP and got my new box communicating directly to the DSL modem.

Anyway, I decided to name my new PC "Deep Thought" since my WinXP is called "Marvin" (can you tell I love Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy?)

I don't get it. You said you were aiming for a Radeon 9600, but you are not interested in 3D? WTF? Why waste your money on a Radeon 9600 then?

And BTW ATI sucks under Linux, and not just for 3D. I highly recommend either Matrox or nVidia.
