Firefox has decided to break down recently.
I have re-build firefox itself.
I have re-installed the kernel (and that was a story) and the nvidia-drivers.
I even tried re-building firefox with --empty-tree
It runs, but does not go to any pages at all.
I run it from an xterm, to watch the output, itgenerates an error message prompting me to connect via gdb.
If I do nothing, firefox eventually dies (as per the gdb message, I have a limited time to connect)
I have tried to run firefox with --safe-mode, to no avail.
I have tried refreshing firefox, to no avail.
I use X, not Wayland.
I use Fluxbox, not Gnome or KDE.
I use openrc not Systemd.
My gentoo install is about 5 years old and kept fully up to date, every night.
This is the first time a problem like this has arisen although, firefox has been generating core files (regularly) for the last couple of months.
Because of these core files, my system is built with debug symbols, where possible.

What if you locally /etc/portage/[package.env/env] inhibit -ggdb3?

[Edit: I misinterpreted what you indicated above, you are turning ON debug symbols by inhibiting turning off the switch that turns debug symbols off I already have a Debug environment, but I had not explictly set Firefox to use that env, I will next build]
An idea, but firefox started generating core dumps before I turned on debug.
This is across multiple kernel versions with multiple re-installations of nvidia-drivers (my video card is nVidia)

My turning on debug was an attempt to generate a useful core file for mozilla.
It generated so many core files that I had to setup a cron job to delete old ones.
The apparent symptom was if multiple tabs attempted to show video (say, 2 tabs with youtube), or, worse still, a page had an advert with video.
The reason it didn't crash ALL the time was I have AdBlock installed.

Good suggestion, didn't work 
Once I created a new 'Anti-Crash' profile, it generated the same gdb connection request to stdout and does not render pages.
I tried doing a complete refresh, which, I suspect is the same thing.
I have tried --safe-mode, also without joy
I am building chromium at the moment, but cos chromium takes about 20G of /tmp space and I only have 24G available, I can't rebuild firefox till Chomium is done.
(my /tmp is a 'tmpfs', which is RAM based, in attempt to speed up compilation times, Thunderbird, Firefox and Chrome, however, are still over 6 hours build time on my 8 core system).
