I want to use "app-admin/sysklogd" as system logger. But "app-admin/metalog" is installed. "metalog" is a depency for "virtual/logger". "virtual/logger" is a depency for "sys-apps/lm-sensors". ... etc

Ok, problem solved. I emerged "app-admin/sysklogd" and "app-admin/metalog".

after then: "emerge --deselect metalog"

and "emerge --ask depclean" to remove metalog.

Is there a smarter way?
Presumably the command you ran was with --depclean, not "depclean"?

Either way, next time add --verbose. With verbose, you should get information about what required metalog.

Maybe that's how you obtained the information in the first quote above? So...

lmsensors requires a logger, but doesn't care what, so it accepts virtual/logger. Anything that satisfies virtual/logger is good enough.

Installing sysklogd also satisfies virtual/logger. At this theoretical point, you now have two loggers installed (metalog, sysklogd). Not needing both, you should have been able to use emerge -c to uninstall metalog. You did not need to reinstall metalog (or add it to world), deselect metalog, and the emerge -c it.

No, this setting is permanent and has to last if or until the main profile is set with merged-usr.

Is there a timeline?

Maybe this can help as soon as it is updated:

Hello, this is not Hans again, I'm reactivating this topic. :)

I have my own profile according to this example [1]. Without systemd and with merged-usr.

Code:

gentoo:default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/plasma
gentoo:features/merged-usr

I would now also like to jump to version 23. Is now my right choice:

Code:

$ eselect profile list
[...]
  [27] default/linux/amd64/23.0/desktop/plasma (stable)
[...]

Openrc with merged usr?

Thanks for your help. :)

Interestingly, it is not in the table. Which binary link matches to my profile?

I guess none ... because you have a rare installation (yet): OpenRC/Plasma WITH merged-usr.

Usually all 17.1 plasma WAS split-usr ... and in https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Toolchain/23.0_update_instructions it is said that you shall upgrade to 23.0 FIRST and THEN migrate to merged-usr.

I guess we get binaries for 23.0-plasma+merged-usr later ... but our developers could answer better.
