When Adding printers, CUPS web returns:
Code:
Discovered Network Printers:
HP Deskjet 2540 series (driverless) (HP Deskjet 2540 series)
Deskjet 2540 series (HP Deskjet 2540 series)
Deskjet 2540 series [208AFA] (HP Deskjet 2540 series)

Other Network Printers:
AppSocket/HP JetDirect
Internet Printing Protocol (https)
Internet Printing Protocol (http)
Backend Error Handler
Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
Internet Printing Protocol (ipps)
LPD/LPR Host or Printer
No idea which to choose...

Any experience to share?

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

I haven't added network printer to CUPS. I'm just sending stuff to line printer and cups magically pushes it through LAN, probably using ipp-everywhere. Firefox somehow detects LAN printer and allows me to select it; the other programs, using standard printing dialog, don't seem to know or care what happens after I greenlight the task. Cups just picks it up and dispatches to whatever it detects.
Which doesn't give me the kind of control I'd like, but at least it worked last few times I needed it.

CaptainBlood,

Code:
(driverless)
is key here.

I think that means choosing the Generic printer in Cups and not using a Cups driver.

Thks 2 both of you for your answers.

Seems things are originated as follows:

Deskjet 2540 series [208AFA] (HP Deskjet 2540 series) => media-gfx/sane-airscan (lilely required for sane 2 detect scanner over the network)
Deskjet 2540 series (HP Deskjet 2540 series) => net-print/hplip (2013 september)
HP Deskjet 2540 series (driverless) (HP Deskjet 2540 series) => net-print/cups-filters

Waiting for ink cartridge for tests.

Will update once I'll get the best printing with the less packages installed.

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.
