Without Valve Linux gaming would have been nowhere where it is now.
Steam's proton has made gaming on Linux incredibly easy and smooth,
I can run pretty much any game from my steam library which is mostly single-player games.
I did hear that most multiplayer shooters don't work but that's mostly because
they let you install malware anti-cheat inside of your kernel. I was really
surprised today when I ran a ray-tracing game completely smooth
without issues using proton, i didn't knew we where that far already.

I'm really grateful Valve got the monopoly on PC gaming and not some
shady tech giant like Microshit or Google, imagine how bad things would
be in gaming if that where the case.

So by developing the kernel to make it better for gaming also made it more useful for other things, interesting.
Gaming on Linux really has come far. The only thing that I see Linux mostly struggle with is kernel level anti-cheat which in my opinion should not exist in the first place.
I also which to see better support for VR, if VR works well I can finally say goodbye to my dual-boot setup with a debloated binbows version.

I do appreciate the Linux native client of Steam (still using the first "install" (unpacked copy) of the client from 2013, though I guess every piece of it has changed by now... hmmm, no, some data there still last modified in 2013, but I suppose those files might not even be shipped any longer), and any Linux native game that that helped pave the way for.

I do, however, have mixed feelings about Proton.

While I have been using Wine since 2010 when I started using Linux (and Gentoo Linux), and most likely would not have been able to fully jump into Linux without, Proton has the side effect of actually reducing Linux support... in a way. That is, I'm quite sure a lot of game developers who even thought of creating a /native/ Linux build, instead just tests that their creation works with Proton (or just hopes it does).

I've made it a point to myself to only buy games with native Linux support, unless it's a very nostalgic title to me or something like that. I'm, sure that'll show 'em. :]

Speaking of anti-cheat, yes they are evil, and at least several of them also do support Linux, but of course then the game developer (if they get to decide) needs to support Linux as well.

In the end, with what they've been doing with Steam itself, and the mixed feelings about Proton, my appreciation to Valve has been waning... but perhaps things will improve from here to the future!

I agree, OP.
Valve has been great for us Linux gamers.
And while I do understand the mixed feelings about Proton that Chiitoo has, I also doubt that without Proton we would have more native Linux games.

Careful Ned, those identifying as oxen might be allowed to nestle beneath the otherkin umbrella or one of the other ones, raincoats, knitted balclavas or somesuch. I personaly identify as the oxy 10 zit remedy from the 1990's adverts on telly but that doesn't count as a protected class yet because I went to a trade school. Also despite how many people tell me I'm moronic, a moran or a Moran I refuse to accept it beacuse I know better so I can't officially take offense for those two reasons yet..
