Hi all,

I apologise if this has been asked before but I cannot seem to find an answer. I am attempting to get Xorg and i3 to work on my Ivy Bridge laptop (Intel Core i7-3615QE) but I get this error and cannot seem to find the cause. The X server seems to start (I get a black screen with a unusable cursor and have to kill it from another tty). I am on kernel 6.6.13 with musl C library, currently on unstable mesa (23.3.4) but the same issue occurs on stable. VIDEO_CARDS is set to "Intel" in make.conf and I use clang as the system compiler. I have also tried xf86-video-intel but that causes a segfault. I have tried running as root to make sure there are no permission problems (I know this is a bad idea).

pbramberg,

Welcome to Gentoo.

Please use wgetpaste to post large logs or config files. The forum silently truncates posts to 64kb.

On gentoo, by default, startx starts the X server, finds nothing to do and exits.
That's what your log shows.
How did you configure startx to run i3 ?

Quote:
VIDEO_CARDS is set to "Intel"
that's correct.
Xorg is using the modesetting driver, which is correct too.

The automatic detection shows
Code:
[ 34.827] (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0
[ 34.827] (==) Matched modesetting as autoconfigured driver 1
[ 34.827] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 2
[ 34.827] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 3
[ 34.827] (==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
[ 34.827] (II) LoadModule: "intel"
[ 34.827] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module intel
[ 34.827] (EE) Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)

Setting intel is VIDEO_CARDS should have installed x886-video-intel which is not found, so the modsetting driver that your really want to use is in use as second choice.

musl lacks a lot of features to make it compatible with glibc. That's a deliberate feature, not a bug. I'm not sure if that matters with Xorg and i3

This is no longer the case but is the desired effect. That package should not be installed.

Thank you, NeddySeagoon. I will use wgetpaste in the future.

According to the Gentoo wiki (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel#X_drivers) it is normal that the modesetting driver is used but I would be happy with xf86-video-intel if I could figure out why it segfaults.

I use "exec i3" in .xinitrc to start i3 but I have also tried to launch it with "startx /usr/bin/i3" with the same results. Here is a log from my attempt to do that: https://bpa.st/JIPRO

I have to "killall i3" from a different tty to close out of what looks like an empty and unusable tty (which is what I get when I run startx). To me it looks as if some problem occurs at row 380-381 of that paste:
Quote:

[ 9019.494] (EE) modeset(0): Failed to set CTM property: -22
[ 9019.494] (EE) modeset(0): failed to set mode: No such file or directory

What is CTM property: -22 and what file is it searching for?

Thank you again.

pbramberg,

Lets separate out Xorg problems from i3 problems with a small test.

Move your ~/.xinitrc file so that it is not found. Keep it for later.

Code:
emerge -1av twm xterm xclock
That's the defaults that startx will try to use.
-1 means --oneshot. Do not add anything to your world file.

If all is well, startx will start three xterms and xclock all wrapped up in twm.

To operate twm, you need to know that it only uses the primary mouse button.
If that works, Xorg is OK and its an ~/.xinitrc or i3 configuration issue.

I think
Code:
[ 9019.494] (EE) modeset(0): Failed to set CTM property: -22
is a colour management thing.
Its not a fatal error or the log would have stopped about there.

xf86-video-intel is depreciated and best not used.

Thank you again, NeedySeagoon.

I tried that and also tried remerging xorg-server and mesa (not that I know why that would help).

The symptoms are the same except for the tty being filled with repeated "open ttydev: I/O error" after I have killed X (this time "killall X" instead of i3) from another tty. Here is the Xorg log: https://bpa.st/UAECE

pbramberg,

That's useful
Code:
open ttydev: I/O error

The Xorg.0.log may say something about opening a tty ... operation not permitted.

Xorg needs to do its setup as root.
In the old days Xorg was set suid, so it ran as root for everyone. That still works.

The modern way is to use some other tool to do the root setup, then Xorg runs as your normal user.
Do you want the complexity and bugs that go with 'some other tool' or do you want to use Xorg with suid?

'some other tool' means systemd or elogind. If you use OpenRC ensure that elogind is started before your run startx.

Hmm x11-base/xorg-server has USE=suid and USE=elongind you need one of those set.

DO NOT put suid into make.conf. Set it on a per package basis if that the way you choose to go.

Thank you for that, NeedySeagoon. This occurs when I try to run Xorg as root (only for testing, I am aware of the risks) so I don't think it's a permissions issue. Sorry for not being clearer. I'm specifically avoiding 'some other tool' on this system so I will set suid once I have it working as root.

pbramberg,

Please pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
That's
Code:
wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Roots Xorg log is always there.

pbramberg,

Code:
[ 18819.442] (II) modeset(0): Using spanning desktop for initial modes
[ 18819.442] (II) modeset(0): Output LVDS-1 using initial mode 1366x768 +0+0
[ 18819.442] (II) modeset(0): Output DP-2 using initial mode 1920x1080 +1366+0
...
[ 18819.576] (EE) modeset(0): failed to set mode: No such file or directory
[ 18822.480] (II) AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

You have two displays connected. I think that error means that Xorg tried to set a mode and failed, then it shut down gracefully.

Output LVDS-1 is a laptop internal display.
Output DP-2 is an external display.. Shut down, disconnect the external display and test again.
Multi display setups often require .conf fragments to get to work properly.

Have a look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.txt
You log says
Code:
[ 23611.050] Kernel command line: intel_iommu=on intel_iommu=igfx_off

I don't think multiple values for intel_iommu= are useful.
Try removing them both.

Why are they there?

Thank you so much! That solved it and I feel kind of silly now. Those parameters must have been left behind when I migrated to Gentoo (I experimented with GPU passthrough).

pbramberg,

Its not silly if you learn from it.
It's been a learning experience for me, so its not wasted, on me anyway.
