|
|
I'm looking for a dictionary cli that allows for translation between multiple languages and definition lookup in multiple languages.
I stumbled upon dictd: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dictd but I can't figure out how to find dictd compatible dictionaries.
There are a few english to english dictionaries available but no between language translations.
I know that freedict has many dictionaries available but freedict-tools, the tool necessary to convert their dicts to dictd is not available on portage.
Is there any way to get dictd compatible dictionaries or is there another dictionary tool that is better supported on gentoo? |

Debian dict packages seems to use these dicts. _________________ Questions are guaranteed in life; Answers aren't. |

The freedict packages in the main repo - freedict-deu-eng, freedict-eng-fra, freedict-eng-ita, freedict-eng-swe, freedict-fra-eng and freedict-ita-eng - are already in dict format; their ebuilds, using the 'freedict' eclass, simply pull .tar.gz files from http://freedict.sourceforge.net/download/linux/ (which unfortunately is down right now).
The freedict.org FAQ says:
Quote: | Currently only one output format is supported: the dict format. |
So i presume the dictionaries available on SourceForge are those pre-built by FreeDict's build system. |

i've just updated the dictd wiki page to say:
Quote: | Dictionaries in the dict format can be found in the app-dicts category with the prefixes dictd- and freedict-; the freedict packages install .tar.gz files available on SourceForge. |

i've also edited the wiki page to reference freedict.org/downloads, and opened an issue on b.g.o about possibly modifying the freedict eclass to download dictionaries from download.freedict.org, which would enable packaging many more freedict dictionaries. |

thanks a lot for your help!
I didn't realise that the dictionaries available in the main repo already have a dictd compatible format.
The issue is that the ebuilds install the dictionaries under "/usr/lib64/dict/" while other ebuilds expect the dictionaries to be in "/usr/share/dict/": https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/tree/app-dicts/dictd-wn/dictd-wn-3.0_p33-r1.ebuild
The path for the dictionaries can be edited in "/etc/conf.d/dictd" but as far as I can tell "/etc/init.d/dictd" expects only one path to be set. |
