I just installed gentoo with a machine that has an AMD RX 6700 XT. I have linux-firmware installed, the issue is, about halfway through the boot seqeunce (see video below), the video output stops. I know the machine boots successfully as I can ssh in from another computer. What's the issue here? The only way to get video output for now is to use the "nomodeset" [/code]boot option. Let me know what logs you would like to debug this issue.

Please post dmesg output from an ssh session when the screen is black.
This can also be saved to /var/log/dmesg{,.old} by setting the right settings in /etc/conf.d/bootmisc |

Code: | [ 6.097338] amdgpu 0000:07:00.0: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes |
This generally means no connection to a display was found for this chip.
Is this a discrete card or a laptop with integrated graphics? The latter may be run via another iGPU.
Showing lspci -nnk is the next step. |

The RX 6700 XT is a discrete graphics card, and this is a desktop tower with the RX 6700 XT being the only card in this machine, no integrated GPU.

MrKomodoDragon,
Your system starts using EFI Framebuffer and the display goes away when it tries to use the amdgpufb, which is broken.
Code: | [ 6.097338] amdgpu 0000:07:00.0: [drm] Cannot find any crtc or sizes |
can mean the the graphics card cannot read the EDID data from the display for whatever reason.
That can e as simple as the video cable not connected properly. Check both ends. or the EDID data being corrupt.
Its possible to provide the EDID data you want to use in a file, so that the file is used to set up the display.
What display - make and model do you have?
I've never used the kernel EDID override, just seen it in the kernel.
-- edit --
Code: | $ dmesg
[ 0.000000] Linux version 6.1.67-gentoo-dist | It may be worth trying the testing kernel too as 6.1.x is nearly a year old, feature wise. _________________ Regards,

I unplugged and replugged the HDMI cable to the monitor, and now it works????????. I'm going to try doing this cycle again to make sure it works _________________ A silly little komodo dragon |

Actually I too have been observing similar behavior under Wayland when I plug my TV through HDMI. It never detects it the first time unless I open Gnome Control Center and open the Displays tab. So it might not be a bad cable or connector. Although I too have suspicions for my cable that behavior is way more consistent than a bad cable or connector can be unless it's completely broken.
Best Regards,
Georgi |
