The captcha question on account creation for the Gentoo Wiki is turning people away because it's too complex and impossible to answer if a working system isn't available.

Been fighting with a Gentoo install on a PowerMac G5 and discovered a handful of items in which the PPC handbook is incorrect. Tried to create a wiki account to at least start a discussion on making some edits. Ran into the captcha question:

Quote:
On a recent Gentoo system, what does sed -n "6p" /etc/os-release | sha256sum | cut -d " " -f 1 print?

Okay, I figure it's some overly complex way to spell out "gentoo" or "linux" or something dumb like that. I can't run the command because I don't have a working system at the moment. Now I'm wasting time on this forum post instead of contributing meaningful improvements to this project.

I think that the handbook requires special permissions and cannot be edited by "newly registered" people anyway. So it is probably better if you open a thread here in the forum with the "meaningful improvements".

sMueggli,

The handbook itself is protected but the discussion pages are not.

Creating bugs at bugs.gentoo.org will work too.

Hi MidnightCheese,

Is this issue related to yaboot being broken as it is a known issue being worked on in Gentoo now https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook_Talk:PPC64/Installation/Bootloader with the temporary solution being held at https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Immolo/NewWorldGRUB

With issues like these it is normally better to ask on IRC (irc.gentoo.org #gentoo-powerpc in this case) or visit the forums as the Handbook is protected from normal users being edited and it's easier to see discussions and issues in the places I highlighted. If you feel like there is a bug though after the help then you can raise a documentation bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Documentation&format=guided

This is a great example of information that should be in the handbook, outside of the Discussion tab. What's the best path to getting this in the handbook? How can I help directly? (This would have saved me and others multiple install attempts and hours of wasted time.)

Please test it works, give suggestions to improve it and open a bug, however please don't think this isn't being worked as Maffblaster and myself have been dealing with this trying to solve the issue correctly.

Do you know anymore issues in the handbook as that's the only one I'm aware of currently.

I don't doubt it's being worked on, and I appreciate the effort. Thank you. I would love to have Gentoo running on this old G5 some day.

It sounds to me:

    The yaboot bug is known
The bug is actively being addressed
And in the meantime, there's a workaround with grub

But that needs to be communicated in the handbook so people aren't spending time following a guide that is incorrect. I'm just trying to save someone else from spending the hours I did, not knowing that the yaboot functionality is broken. A simple note in the handbook would eliminate a lot of frustration.
