PostPosted: Tue Jan 24, 2023 9:48 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] blackscreen after boot kernel message, Reply with quote

My computer is MSI MOTAR B450 + AMD R5 3600 + Nvidia 1060, kernel 5.15.59, BIOS(not UEFI), Gnome3
nearly I did a "emerge update deep new world", the last time I did the update is 3-6 months ago.

after this update, I find that after power on, bios info, GRUB menu, and console boot message, all seems well,
but when it's the time that desktop should appear, there's no signal on HDMI and screen turn to 'black and sleep mode'.

I try to login even though I can't see the desktop, and try execute some command such as "dmesg > ~/dmesg.log",
I find it works. I can see the dmesg.log on the harddisk when I boot a ubuntu usb livecd.

I try update the kernel to 5.15.88 and do "emerge -e world", but no use, still blackscreen after boot.
I try systemctl disable gdm, but still blackscreen. no character console.

here is my dmesg log and KERNEL CONFIG. Any help? thanks.

there's no new /var/log/Xorg.0.log file generated after I remove the old one.

how to upload the attachments? always get "error in posting"

KERNEL CONFIG_FB_VESA/SIMPLE/EFI are all selected according to nvidia driver's hint.

double_crane,

Use wgetpaste to put the files onto a pastebin site and post links.
Helpers will quote the interesting bits so that they are not lost.

When does to screen go blank?
After grub, when the kernel loads?
After the kernel messages as the desktop starts?

double_crane,

That helps.

Pastebin those two files and your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file please.

double_crane,

Your dmesg comes from
Code:
[    0.000000] Linux version 5.15.88-gentoo ... #2 SMP Fri Jan 20 16:34:57 CST 2023
Which the second build of that version of the kernel.
The the kernel build time in Fri Jan 20 16:34:57 CST 2023

dmesg does not show efifb in use, nor does your video show any tux logos.
Both are included in the config file you posted.

My conclusion in that kernel config and dmesg are from different kernels.
That's easy to do, forget to mount /boot for the kernel install and its correctly installed to the wrong place, so there is no error message.

Is Fri Jan 20 16:34:57 CST 2023 the last time you built your kernel?

yes, I did emerge and met this problem a week ago, and I have tried a lot but failed.
the dmesg.txt is firstly printed at 20th,Jan. Today I blind login and type again and get a newer one. I have uploaded it to [url] http://double-crane.imzone.in/gentooforum/dmesg230124.txt [/url]

I saw the pidgin logos at the left top of screen at the time of printing kernel messages before, that is on my last laptop computer installed gentoo too. but since I buy this new desktop computer at 2019, I never see these cute pidgins.(I did not install from stage3, but copied the installed gentoo system partition from my laptop, and chroot, change some make.conf and drivers in kernel config and rebuild. no pidgin logos ever seen.)

I install the all gentoo system to a single partition, / /boot /home, and others, all are together in /dev/nvmen1p1.

-------------------------------------------------------

solved, I use the wrong /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which has none Card driver defined.
Wonder Why I didn't met this problem before this update. It should be wrong long long ago.

I still have none pidgin logos when kernel printing boot message.
