Hi everyone,

I've an issue with the last update who pushed Gnome 43.

I can launch gnome applications at start, but after that, it's impossible.

I try many things, like create a new profile, rebuild gnome dependencies, downgrading gnome-shell without success.

I checked the dmesg file, here's the output :

Code:

It seems it's a problem with glib libraries, but i can't resolve the issue by myself.

Fun fact, the applications start if I launch them with the terminal (nautilus won't crash, but gnome-control-center yes).

if I run the gnome text editor through the terminal (while the icon does not allow launching), the following messages appears. I don't know if it's relevant.
Code:

(gnome-text-editor:9435): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 17:24:39.059: g_dbus_connection_emit_signal: assertion 'object_path != NULL && g_variant_is_object_path (object_path)' failed

If someone has the same problem, or a solution for it, i would be grateful.

Thanks for the help.

To those who will read, i can't find a solution.
I've read the logs, deactivate all extensions, try with a new user account, recompile my entire system, recreated a kernel file from scratch, even did a fresh install, but the problem persists.
I don't know if the problem will be solved by a future update (which I hope it will). I'll give it a month in case an update fixes it, otherwise I'll have to change distribution unfortunately. I don't want to login in/log out every 30 minutes.
Thanks to those who took the time to read.

Why does logging in and out help? If you use a simpler environment, such as XFCE, is that stable? When an application crashes, what does the backtrace show? You may need to rebuild with debugging symbols before collecting the backtrace.

I haven't tried with XFCE. I will do the test tonight.

Log out/log in again to re-launch the applications.

I rebuild gnome-control-center with "debug" USE flag, so i must wait for the issue occurs. When it will done, i post here the output.

I found that the whole desktop environment is not working because, after trying to restart Gnome by pressing "ALT-F2" and "r" (under Xorg), it freezes completely. Always with "ALT-F2" prompt, i can launch Gnome-control-manager and Nautilus but not Gnome-terminal when "bugged".

With XFCE, after booting the computer for one hour, no issue. All applications launch correctly.

I completely uninstall gnome properly, switch to desktop profile with "eselect profile set 5", "emerge -avuDN @world" and "dispatch-conf; emerge -ac; emerge @module-rebuild; emerge @preserved-rebuild; revdep-rebuild -iq; eclean -d distfiles". After that, i installed XFCE with the Gentoo's wiki.

It seems it's relative to Gnome.

The wording of that Portage notice was not picked lightly. I would have serious concerns about the stability of any package which triggers "severe warnings which indicate that it may exhibit random runtime failures."

Of the ones shown, the LLVM warnings I might dismiss, because I know they do some weird things that walk on the edge of validity. None of the others seem worth dismissing. In particular, returning the address of a local variable is wrong unless the return value is ignored, the strncat will probably not do what is desired, freeing a non-heap object is very wrong, and the incompatible pointer type ones may be wrong, depending on the underlying types. Some of your warnings appear to have been truncated. long unsigned i> looks wrong in the zziplib warnings.

It would be interesting to know if other users' logs show the same messages.
